Features to look for when getting a new free email account include amount of storage, ads or no ads in accounts, spam protection, virus protection, POP/SMTP/IMAP access, speed, uptime, calendar, address book, extra features, and ease of use.
Unlimited and large storage is very nice in an email account. You don't have to worry about not receiving an email because your email box is full. Spam and virus protection are an absolute necessary in today's world. It is unbelievable how many unwanted emails you will receive if you don't have this protection and your email address is publicly available.
If you are using an email program to download your email to your computer you will want a free email account with at least POP/SMTP/IMAP access. Most free accounts provide you with set up information to download your email to an email client or email program.
You should also consider speed and uptime. Some free email web sites are slow and sometimes their service is interrupted frequently. It can be very frustrating if you need to send an urgent email and your email service is down. This is why it is always nice to have more than one email address.
There are not many free email accounts that are ad free. The one I did find that is ad free is Safe-mail.net. The free account at Safe-mail.net has only 3MB of storage space. This is a great free email account if you do not send or receive large emails or emails with large attachments. It is very nice not to be bothered or annoyed by ads.
Gmail, Google's free email, is one of the best free email providers that provides a great number of features-a lot of storage, calendar, virus and spam protection, and POP/SMTP/IMAP access. It is supported by Google ads. With a Google account you also get a lot of extra features such as Google sites and Google docs.
A new site that also promises to be good for providing a great free email account is GMX.com. GMX offers 5 GB storage space, virus and spam protection, and POP/SMTP/IMAP access. I have not seen any ads on this site yet, however, the site is still in beta.
No matter where you choose to have a free email account, choose a user name that you will remember. Also, choose a password that would be difficult for someone else to guess.
