Why I Signed Up for Fantasy Football

Julie Boehlke
Lately, my co worker has been constantly talking about one of her favorite hobbies; no it isn't scrapbooking or reading, its Fantasy Football. She doesn't come off as being the Football type. She's a Secretary like me and generally our topic of daily conversation is usually our husbands, what's for our low fat lunch, our children and our co-workers of course. Then she whispered to me and sprang it on me like a dirty little secret, "I'm obsessed with Fantasy Football and I can't get enough!"

Stunned and speechless, I took it all in with much dismay, thinking how am I going to sit here for the next Football season and listen to all this football rubbish, its bad enough I have to listen to Golf stories when I get home from my husband, this is going to rather be unfun. The only thing good about football is the tight uniforms that display well rounded tushes.

She then proceeded to explain to me that it was more a competition and all about stats more than the game itself. My competitive nature kicked in and decided to check things out for myself.

Fantasy Football starts off by going to yahoo.com and setting up a league, which she already did, so I had to go in and add the name of my own team. Knowing nothing really about football, I was clueless. I reflected back to the days when my daughter was in Junior High Cheerleading and I remember there was an obnoxious overweight football fanatic that sat behind us ringing a damn cow bell every time the Aggie's scored a touchdown. How could I forget the ringing in the ears that lasted all night? Well anyhow after he rang the bell, he yelled first down Aggie's Score! Score! So I came up with my team name, "First Down Score". Pretty tacky for a newbie, but I really don't care, I'm just signing up for my co worker, so we have a different topic of conversation to stew about from time to time.

Well then it came time to do a pre draft for my team, that was easy enough all I did was went in and selected the names of different players and then looked at their picture, if they were cute I added them. That was that.

I did in fact add David Kirkus to my team, for the only simple fact that he grew up in the same tiny town of Imlay City I did, which is located in the thumb of Michigan. He played for the Detroit Lions for a few years and now plays Wide Receiver for the Denver Broncos, surely the mere fact we grew up just down the dirt road from each other has to bring me some luck right?

Well then last week when I got the TV Guide magazine in the mail, it had a huge article on top draft picks and other info about this seasons NFL players. So I decided to go in and revise my team players a bit. I added every player mentioned in the article, including the worst picks, I figured what do I have to lose, it would be hilarious if I got top rankings well above her, especially when she obsessively goes in with a calculator calculating the stats on each player and analyzing everything to a tee. Not me, I just pick em and add em!

So today is the live draft and I doubt Ill show up to it, I have my players lined up, granted a lot of them are ranked very low, but I have confidence their training they have been doing all year will give me lots of points, yes it's a gamble I'm willing to take.

No I doubt Ill watch much football this year except the Superbowl Half Time Show, which is always a hit in my book and of course all the tasty snacks throughout the game. But surely you won't see me tuning in to Monday night football; I'm more of a news and radio kind of a person.
