Why So You Think You Can Dance is Ready to Take Over American Idol Fans

Can Dancing Compete with Singing?

In a reality television world where virtually every corner of the universe is televised in some fashion or another, So You Think You Can Dance has slowly begun taking over. Over the course of a season, you see much of the normal things that one would expect in a "talent competition" type show. You see the silly auditions, the week of competition and ultimately the performers battle it out for the title of America's Best Dancer. If you blink once or twice, you might even think that you are watching American Idol for a second - sans the singing of course. So what makes So You Think You Can Dance so intriguing? Why is it actually seeming to gain ground on the iconic American Idol with the fans? Here are some reasons that So You Think You Can Dance is so popular right now, and why it might just overtake American Idol.

The first thing about So You Think You Can Dance that makes it so good is the talent level. The ability of the dancers is absolutely through the roof. This is so marked in fact, that when the producers bring in the "Pros" on the show as acts, the So You Think You Can Dance dancers seem to be even better. On American Idol, you bring in Usher, Bon Jovi, or some other huge act, and they seem to be light years ahead of the American Idol contestants. This is not the case on So You Think You Can Dance.

Another great thing about So You Think You Can Dance is the judging procedure. They actually listened to America and have it right. With American Idol, the judges have very little say about who goes home. America votes, and if a huge group wants to flub up the results they can. With So You Think You Can Dance, America votes and the judges choose from among the bottom three. They also allow the three bottom dancers to "Dance for their Life" at the results show. While this is rather melodramatic, it still adds some interest to the normally boring as hell results show. You know that the right person will usually go home.

Want to see something truly unique and special? That is yet another reason why So You Think You Can Dance is superior to American Idol. The dancers are doing their own thing, and using their own talents to entertain us (though they do have the choreography to follow). With American Idol, you are getting cover after cover of the same old songs year after year. Don't get me wrong, I know the songs are unique to the singers some of the time (nobody would confuse Adam Lambert with Johnny Cash for example) but it is still covers. I would love to see American Idol allow some of the contestants to write their own songs. So You Think You Can Dance has that original feeling to every performance, and it makes them shine all the more.

There are plenty of reasons I love So You Think You Can Dance more than American Idol, and apparently much of America is agreeing with me. These reasons are just a few of the reasons why.
