Why is Society Obsessed with Beauty?

Recently we as a society have been exposed to the ever present surge of pressure to be young and staying infinitely beautiful forever. The cosmetic companies and plastic surgeons(breast implants have become more commonplace than ever) have not felt one little blip in their pocketbooks. It is safe to say that we as a culture are obsessed with beauty. There is nothing wrong with this obsession as long as you are fortunate enough to be blessed with beauty. These people are always the ones that end up on top in the game of life.

In High School you have the cheerleaders and the jocks , then it goes on down the line. You always know who the degenerate freaks are because they are not beautiful. They sit outside at lunch and eat sandwiches out of their Star Wars lunch boxes. These kids usually are the ones that grow up to be the business owners. They travel to Europe to "find themselves" and end up becoming successful.

The cheerleaders marry the rich guy and have kids before the age of twenty five and experience life in small doses as they wait for their husband to return home from the office. This seems to be a little too cliche, however you will find there is a severe truth to this. Why do beautiful people feel they can kind of "slack off" they are used to being handed everything? What happens when the cheerleader turns into a forty something cougarlicious mom teen wannabe? Again its okay be a mom and act young but our society has no real respect for the elderly.

Asian cultures revere the elderly as wise and worthy of respect because they know that those that have gone before us have life experience; well earned behind those years. Why does aging have to be so ugly? Why does the body decompose the moment we are born? We are designed to fade as we age and yet we as society still worship youth and beauty as if it will last forever. No one is meant to live forever yet we strive everyday to make medical breakthroughs that prolong our life span.

We should realize how much time and energy we waste trying to look young and live forever instead of finding that living life is beautiful and being the person you are is the most beautiful thing anyone can do regardless of age. We struggle with this perfectionism and it all stops with you.
