These other surroundings can include other children of the same peer group or possibly the media such as television, films, video games, music or even magazines. Even if a child knows it goes against what their parent have taught them, they feel the need to be accepted or to do what is considered "in" at the time. Media plays a good part of this due to the fact that right now we are at the height of commercialization. Television advertisements might have catching ads that entice children. For example, the advertisements for video games which is a large industry today. Twenty years ago, it was a very different story. Films have much more violence today and some music has pushed the boundaries on what would be deemed appropriate.
Children have a fear of rejection and want to be accepted by society which includes their peers. This can affect their thinking, attitude and interests of a child. They'll mimic another child if they feel that they will be received into the group.
One thing parents can do in order to guide their children in the right direction is to be aware of the types of children they are around and the sort of lifestyle that child is leading. Make friends with their parents if possible so you can keep a watchful eye on them. They should also invest their time into what interests their child is interested in whether it be a film or television program or a type of sport.
It is vital for parents at times to be a friend to their child and to understand what he or she needs. By doing this you might be able to make your child more open so he or she will share things with you. It is also important that parents show their appreciation for children when he or she does something commendable. This helps to build character and gives the child a strong sense of self along with worth.
