Why Some Parents Refuse Vaccines for Their Children

WorkingMom
In San Diego in February of this year 2008, there have been 10 reported cases of measles, the first outbreak in 17 years. About 50 children who were exposed to these infected children have had to be quarantined either because they were too young to get the measles vaccine, or their parents refused inoculation for them. [1]

This article is not to debate whether or not autism is caused by vaccines, or whether vaccines are safe or not. Rather, this article tries to explain why parents refuse vaccines even though the medical community continues to insist they are perfectly safe.

Study after study is published claiming vaccines are not harmful. The CDC and NIH continue to state there is no link between vaccines and autism. But more and more parents are refusing to have their children vaccinated. Doctors are left scratching their heads and wondering why their patients won't believe them when they tell them vaccines are safe.

Health officials are concerned that we will continue to see more outbreaks of potentially life threatening diseases that for so long have been non-existent. Others are worried that children who do not get vaccinated cause a greater risk of spreading communicable disease to others who may not be vaccinated yet. Many people do not trust their health care provider to tell them the truth about the safety of vaccines and possible negative side effects.

There was a time when people trusted their doctors. Even though the majority of doctors are honest, hard working, dedicated individuals who believe in doing what is best for their patients, we are confronted with less than ethical doctors who are influenced by drug companies and health insurance companies to cut costs and increase profits, and what's best for the patient is forgotten.

There are doctors have who told parents to put their children on Ritalin and Prozac, even when they didn't need it and who accept bonuses from health insurance companies when they deny their patients care. Is it any wonder that parents feel they can't trust what their doctors tell them anymore?

It is no secret that drug companies lie about the negative side effects of their drugs. Eli Lilly, the drug manufacturer of Prozac, had data stating patients on Prozac were far more likely to attempt suicide and show hostility than patients on other antidepressants. The drug company did not inform the public about the negative side effects.[2] If drug companies are allowed to cover up negative clinical drug studies, it's not hard to imagine that vaccine manufacturers would do the same, and thanks to the internet, parents are very aware of this deceitfulness.

For the record, the World Health Organization has stated that there is no evidence of a causal link between the measles vaccine and autism. [3] While autism is not a pleasant outcome, when compared the possibility of contracting a life threatening disease, the benefits of receiving a vaccine should outweigh the possible risks.

The debate as to whether autism is caused by vaccines continues on. But until doctors and the medical profession restore their creditability with the public, we will continue to have parents who do not believe that vaccines are safe and refuse to get their children vaccinated.

Its been estimated that pediatricians make 50-80% of their income through vaccinations. It is known that bonuses are paid. Its about selling product, not about health. We have been had, and more vaccines will follow.

I'm sorry you feel my article is biased, that was not my intention. The title of my article is Why some parents refuse vaccines for their children, not Do vaccines cause autism.

Why should doctors be trusted more than parents? Not to discount the parent's love for their children, but doctor did go to medical school and know more about medicine than the average parent does.
While doctors do not directly get paid by pharmaceutical companies, the relationship between drug companies and doctors often borders on unethical, which is why parents don't trust doctors anymore. The point of my article was not to debate if vaccines cause autism, but to explain that because doctors have lost their credibility with patients, parents have a hard time believing them when they say their child needs a vaccine.

why does this article mention that study after study say vaccines are safe but it does not mention that study after study (different studies done by different groups) say that vaccines are NOT SAFE? This is obviously a biased review. And why should doctors be trusted more than the parents of a child? Being a doctor is only a job, they dont love your child like you do. Besides do they NOT get paid by pharmacuetical companies?
