There are a number of jobs that can be done at home instead of going to some other place of work generally known as an office. With the computer networking, web and internet access, a lot of work can be done at any place of your choice, so long as the computer is availed and connected to the internet, local area network, or any other network that the office computer is a member.

Jobs such as web design, online tutoring, consultation on other matters that have been online based, accountancy, auditing, file system management, data analysis and reporting, editing of official papers (for local dailies and others) can be done both at home. A daily column writer in a local newspaper does not need to report at the head office of the daily paper in order to submit his/her article for publishing. The editor of the paper does not need to be in the office if his home computer is connected with the computer that receives such articles for editing. A web designer simply requires an apt computer connected to the internet or a computer at home at later on post his page in the internet from any other computer connected to the internet.

With such jobs available, and maybe you are involved in any kind of them, the argument will not be the possibility of you working at home or at any other place other than office to get your job done, but what are the consequences of deciding to work at home.

According to the extent of this article, I will prefer to call home a place where one lives and that the place is known by other persons who will frequently contact you for other businesses other than work. These other persons will include friends, relatives and family members. Home also includes a place of residence where one ought to spend the rest of the day away from work and have the family touch.

Now, when you have bought a personal computer and you have decided to connect it to the internet and maybe to the office computer, and now you want to try performing office duties maybe from your bedroom or in a home office, will you be able to meet the following shortcomings of such a choice?

(i) Will you be able to forgo important family or personal chores when need arise, especially now that you don't have an excuse of being unavailable? Some of these chores are easily avoided due to the fact that office is far or away from home.

(ii) Will you be able to say no to people who would want to see you on personal grounds, on matters of which if you were in office, could have been postponed?

(iii) Are you able to set rules to relatives (father, mother, brothers and sisters included) for not disturbing you during official working hours?

(iv) Are you able to handle emergencies at work that might require your physical presence at that place?

(v) Is your home out of reach for clients who would like to meet you face to face? Will you be able to see such clients at designated places if your home is out bounds due to security and privacy reasons?

(vi) How will you handle family pressure as a result of your presence in the house yet you are not available to them?
These and many other questions should linger into your mind if you are deciding to have your work done from home. But advantages that come from this kind of arrangement will include such benefits as saving on fuel or bus fair, availability, lack of unnecessary pressure from colleagues among other similar benefits.
