Bad Breeding
Abused children often grow to become abusive spouses or parents. An abused pit bull will grow to be mean and aggressive. This is the only thing they have known, so it serves to reason they will do what they have been taught. Since pit bulls were originally bred for bull, badger, and bear baiting, aggressiveness was a desirable trait. However, when these things were outlawed, dog fighting became popular. The naturally mean quality of pit bulls is simply a combination of abuse and bad breeding.
Love and Attention
Many pit bull owners never have a problem with their dog. Just as with any pet, they need love and attention. If more owners would give pit bulls as chance, eventually the aggressiveness can be completely bred out of them. Treating a pit bull as a decent animal instead of a fighter can make all the difference. Give them plenty of exercise as well. Keeping an animal cooped up and alone all day will create a shy and untrusting personality. A lack of trust leads to defensiveness, then to aggressiveness. Most owners think of a pit bull as their child. Raising a child takes time and patience. Raising a pit bull is no different.
Training
Training is a crucial when it comes to pit bulls. Humans can be taught right from wrong, no matter their background. The same goes with pit bulls. Their natural nature can be altered to be much more pleasant. Start to train and social pit bulls as a puppy. The more they are around others, the better they will be. They will look at people and other animals as friends instead of enemies.
Ignorance Is Not Bliss
Breeding, training, and care are the main reasons some pit bulls are naturally mean. Pit bulls bred from dog fighting bloodlines are going to be much harder to train, but it can be done. It simply takes dedicated, responsible owners. People need to understand pit bulls and research their history instead of living in ignorant bliss. Instead of condemning a breed for a bad history, people should give them a chance. Over time, pit bulls could be one of the most lovable dog breeds with the breeding and training.
