Why South Park is Good for Us

Shows like South Park, Family Guy, and the Simpson's Are Actually Doing More Good Than Harm

Jim Kelly
As a college student, some of the main shows that I watch are in fact, cartoons. The Simpson's, South Park, and Family Guy are actually some of the most intelligent shows on television and they never seem to disappoint. My parents did not really restrict me from watching television shows that were rated a little to higher for my age. However, I chose on my own to watch certain shows and censored myself.

Some parents today do not let their children watch some of these "dirty" shows because they feel they are inappropriate. However, if parents just watched these shows carefully and looked between all of the dirty jokes they would see the political, social, and everyday knowledge that actually make up the shows. The jokes involved are sort of crude and inappropriate yes, but they serve to entertain while the information passed along serves to educate.

Anybody happen to catch the recent season premiere of South Park? They had an easy time making fun of Tiger Woods and his marital problems, which probably Tiger will take offense too, but they also hit on some on some major key points that basically promoted their point of view on sex addiction. The creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, argued their points of view through too smart and developed for their own good fourth graders of South Park Elementary. They consistently made a mockery out of sex addiction. I am not saying that sex addiction does not exist, but the show served to give the viewers comedy and an education of what they were all really thinking.

Sex is what everyone in life strives for basically. Yes, there will be people who say that this is not true, but as a human I understand that sex seems to always be on peoples mind. Of course Tiger Woods is addicted to sex argues South Park, a rich, successful, good looking man who is a little lost for morals went out and unforgivably cheated on his wife several times, because of his inner desires and his lack of control.

These shows seem to teach us things that the media do not want to touch on because they are too sensitive and either to liberal or conservative. Shows such as these give us the news that no one else reports. The Simpson's, Family Guy, and South Park will teach us the things that others are a little too afraid to report.
