Why Do Star Wars Fans Hate Return of the Jedi?

Lee Andrew Henderson
Star Wars fans are very passionate about their beliefs and I can certainly understand some of them. Yes, Empire Strikes Back is an awesome movie. Yes, the new trilogy is not very good. Yes, Anakin stinks in the new movies. Yes, Jar Jar needs to go away forever. Yes, Han shot first. I will never understand one thing though and that is everybody's hate for Return of the Jedi.

I don't think Return of the Jedi is the best movie ever but I don't hate it either. The beginning of the movie starts great. R2D2 and C3P0 are wandering the desert, they find Jabba the Hutt's little hideout and we're greeted some pretty cool creatures and things.

Then we see Leia and Luke's plan to free Han Solo unfold and a pretty cool fight scene during their attempted execution that instead turns into their escape. We also get a look at the ultra cool Sarlacc monster.

Return of the Jedi reveals to us that Luke is not the only Skywalker and Return of the Jedi also confirms the bombshell that Darth Vader dropped in Empire Strikes Back, Luke is Darth Vader's son.

Then we go to Endor. Endor is not that bad. Nice forest scenery, nice speeder bike chase and we get to see some of the Empire's cooler vehicles.

Yeah, I know what the Star Wars fans are thinking. But there are Ewoks! My sister once listed a few other complaints about Return of the Jedi that actually made sense but 99% of the complaints are simply "the Ewoks suck!" Let me tell you two reasons I don't understand this complaint.

Many Star Wars fans don't like the fact that these little furry creatures defeated these big bad robots that should've crushed them like grapes. Yeah, so? Isn't that basically the plot of every good guy vs. bad guy movie ever? Ivan Drago should've crushed Rocky Balboa, the terrorists should've killed John McClane, the Predator should've ripped out Arnold Schwarzenegger's heart, Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and their bus should've blown up, James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Neo should've died thousands of times and Ripley should've had an alien rip out of her chest. But none of those things happen because that's how movies work. Now are you going to tell me that every single one of those movies sucks too? I doubt it. Good guys overcome the odds, that's how it works. If the Ewoks have to die because of the Empire then guess what? So do Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie, because they were overmatched too.

Second Star Wars fans hate Ewoks because they're cute little furry things and we can't have silly little cute things in our beloved Star Wars movies! You've gotta be kidding me. Star Wars fans think Ewoks suck because they are little cute things but then they practically bow down and worship Yoda? He's a freakin' Muppet! How can you say Ewoks suck and like Yoda? It makes no sense. And I'm sorry but "finally" seeing Yoda in a light saber fight was not cool. It was the most ridiculous looking garbage I've ever seen. Way more unbelievable than the Ewoks, who had the home field advantage by the way, beating some Empire soldiers, who are pretty renowned for being pretty lousy soldiers to begin with.

So I guess I'm in the minority in saying there's nothing wrong with Return of the Jedi. It's not the best movie ever and the Ewoks aren't the best thing ever created in the Star Wars universe or anything but they're not that bad. Not so bad to completely condemn an entire movie for it.

The reason why people hate ROTJ is because they love it so much they want it to be completely flawless. ROTJ is simply amazing and catapults the Star Wars series into the realm of stuff that myths are made of. SW and TESB were pretty linear and lacked real depth, but ROTJ gives an added dimension to almost everything. Even the force, which was a very juvenile concept at first, now becomes very real. It is the best movie of the trilogy and without it Star Wars would not have become a myth. It has it's share of flaws and they have all been pointed out numerous times, but it's truly great entertainment.

Lucas new that the real money was in toys and that he could continue earning money for generations. Plain and simple, the Ewoks were brought in so that the kiddies would buy in.

I don't see what's so bad about Ewoks either. Yet people constantly complain about them. I also didn't think 'RotJ' was all that bad. I liked it a lot; it wrapped up the saga in a nice bow. Also, who wouldn't want to walk around those treehouses?!

Ewoks. Definitely the Ewoks. I don't hate Jedi, but it was the weakest of the original trilogy. The Jabba sequence was slow. Lucas violated his own editing rule by lingering on scenes simply because they looked cool. I think in ways ROTJ suffered simply in comparison with the the first two movies. They were a hard act to follow. Kinda like Steve Young following in Joe Montana's footsteps. Young was a great QB, but he wasn't Montana. Fun article!

ROTJ was OK, not much really sticks out in my mind like Star Wars and Empire though. Maybe the Rancor and yep, Ewoks.

I think the point of the Ewoks beating the Stormtroopers is similar to Tolkien's ideas of nature vs. machines. Ewoks are the natural creatures and they defeat the mechanical dependent Stormtroopers. And here's a question - Why didn't the Empire invest in some camo? White armor doesn't not help in a green forest!

I also liked the ewoks. It was nice to see that archaic technology can defeat the technology that is all the rage in the SW universe. I liked this move, and its my Mum's favorite!

To what are they comparing this movie? How many truly great sci-fi movies are there? I liked Return of the Jedi, and still do. The Ewoks were a definite marketing ploy, but they are cute!

I *liked* the Ewoks. I wanted to go visit them. :)
