Why Store Bought Haircolor is Bad!

Nichole Beard
OK ladies you all need to know this. We all want to save a buck,so instead of spending $100 at the salon you go to the store. But it never looks like the box. Why you ask? There are many reasons, and I'm going to tell you them. I've been a hairdresser for 10 years and I've seen it all. Not to say i haven't seen people walk out of the salon looking just as bad if they would have done it them self's,but thats a whole other story.

First of all, the hair color you buy in the store is what you call metallic dyes. These are very harmful to your hair shaft. Its like buying industrial strength striper to clean a glossed floor, you will mess it up. A professional hairdresser uses {most of the time} a herbal color with no metallic dyes which is more like putting lotion on your legs {that is if the hairdresser knows what she/he is doing.} Now on hair that has never been colored the store bought might come out wright the first time,But it stains the hair even if it says temporary. Over time you just keep building up a stain that is almost impossible to get off.

You can only park so many cars in one garage well same with color you can only park so many colors in your hair shaft. Otherwise the cuticle in your hair opens and stays that way causing your hair to look dry and damaged. The salon color if you have ever had it done, fades within 6 to 8 weeks this is because the herbal is not as damaging and doesn't stain so when you want a new color its easier for us as hairdressers to alter your color with minimal damage to the hair shaft were you cant do that with store bought hair color. Most of our color comes broke down and this is why a nonprofessional cant buy it. This is why we go to school so we can learn the chemical breakdown and what it does to the hair we learn how to fix damaged hair that has metallic dyes in it.

I always laugh when my clients come in and said I should have listen to you can you fix it! If you only new how many times I've heard that line! So now you've spent the money at the store and double the price at the salon because now we have to fix it. It is a long process sometimes in bad situations a 2 or 3 day possess to fix the damage so that is corrective color which cost an arm and leg sometimes. So in the end its just better to suck it up and go spend a little extra for your hairs future!!!

If you can't take the time to check your own advice article for mistakes, why would I trust that you would take the time to check my hair for mistakes?

I wouldn't trust my hair with someone who can't properly proofread their own article. You completely lost me after the second paragraph.

Great article. I guess that is why hairdresser's are required to be licensed to color and cut hair. I use Garnier Nutrisse. ( You can read my article on the product)It is a little bit more expensive and color for 12 weeks. What do you think of it? Bye
