Here are the top ten reasons why students should study abroad:
1. Improve foreign language skills (or begin to learn).
There is no better way to learn a language than to live it. Even if a person does not know a second language, there are many programs that are offered to students to teach them a second language. When you live in a foreign country, even the most mundane task, such as writing a letter, can become a learning experience. In addition, students living with host families learn a foreign language better as well, because they are using the language all of the time.
2. Gives an opportunity to travel.
When living in a foreign country, a person will not only have the ability to travel the country as a tourist. Instead, they will be given the insights from the natives on the best places to see, places that are overrated, and places that you can travel for cheap.
3. Experience another culture and get a new perspective of your own culture.
Experiencing a new culture, people quickly learn to be flexible and adapt to new circumstances. Students get the opportunity to see the world from another perspective. By living in a different culture, students have the ability to see how their country fits into the world. Some beliefs and values will conflict with your own. People in other cultures are different, but different is not always bad.
4. Boost your confidence.
After studying abroad, many students realize that they are capable of doing more than they ever imagined. Living abroad takes a person out of their comfort zone. By being away from home, it makes a person more independent. Although at times living abroad can be difficult, in the end, it will make a person realize how strong they are on their own.
5. Gain new interest.
Whether it is learning the tango in Argentina or discovering the cooking secrets of Italy, students have the opportunity to try new things. Some of the new things that they learn can become hobbies that they enjoy when they return home.
6. Create a new family.
This may only apply to students who live with host families. Although the idea of moving into a house with complete strangers can be daunting, these strangers can become like a second family. Host families are helpful and supportive to their students. When a student is experiencing homesickness or frustrated over their day, the family is often there to help with any problems. Host families tend to treat the students as if they are their own kids.
7. Make friends from around the world.
When studying abroad, often there are students from all over the globe. During the time abroad, everyone tends to come together and plan weekend outings, explore the town, or go out to eat. When someone is having a difficult time adjusting to the new culture, the people who meet each other while studying abroad tend to create a support group. In the end, lifelong friendships can be created.
8. Enhance your resume.
With many employers trying to hire people with global experience, a study abroad can give a person an advantage in finding jobs. A study abroad program can show flexibility, cultural understanding, and independent with an applicant.
9. Save money.
Depending on the cost of the student's home university, studying abroad can be drastically cheaper depending on location. While locations in Europe tend to be the most expensive, locations in South America, Asia, and Africa can be much cheaper.
10. Decide what to do with your life.
Studying abroad can be a life changing experience. By a student learning about themselves, they can ultimately figure out what they want to do with their life. This opportunity can help a person sculpt their future.
While there are many other reasons to study abroad, these are the top ten reasons. The benefits that occur with studying abroad can last a lifetime.
