Why the Super-Short Bob Doesn't Work for Everyone

K. F. Lynn
It seems that once Victoria Beckham sported the chic, ear-length bob hairstyle, we started to see if everywhere, on everyone. In many ways, the Spice Girl turned soccer-wife brought in a new era of sleek, modern, short hairstyles - something that had never been mainstream in the beauty industry, which is overrun by long hair and fake extensions.

While the short bob flatters a lot of women's face-shapes, I have seen quite a few examples of, "did it just because everyone else did." It was abundantly clear that these ladies did not consider whether or not the cut would flatter them, but rather saw that it worked for others and had heard the myth that the bob "works for everyone." Well, somebody lied. If you are considering getting a short bob, read this over and think twice!

Who should be wary of the bob? The blunt truth:

Full-figured women. Women with extra baggage around the chin should avoid the super-short bob at all costs. A cut that hits the shoulders works worlds better than the bob which draws a lot of attention to your jawline, and if your jawline isn't the most defined, it is best to avoid this style all together.

Women who have short bangs. This is horrendous. This is a trap that Neve Campbell fell into with her super-short bob. Ladies, if you have short bangs (to your eyebrows or above), please avoid this cut. Wait until the bangs grow out a bit, or else you may be stuck looking like the Little Dutch Boy.

Curly-haired women. I hate to be the one to say it, but as cute as bobs may be, for some us of they just are not a realistic goal. Unless you blow dry your hair to straighten it, or flat-iron it every day (both of which cause serious heat damage to your hair), the bob is usually lost in curly hair. Consider it this way: they will straighten your hair and cut it into a bob, but once your hair is wet, it will return to it's natural curl. Your hair will be twice as short curly as it was while straight! If you like the blunt style, try a longer bob near your shoulders.

The truth is that we all have to be honest with ourselves - sometimes brutally - when we let someone get close to us with scissors. Remember, just because it's in style does not mean it suits everybody and their grandmother. If you're looking for a new cut, be sure to consider all the variables before you dive in!
