Why You Should Take Caution with the H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine

Skyler Raine
There is nothing more powerful to control a nation's cash flow than to cripple them with fear. The recent swine flu outbreak has caused world wide concern and very quickly the World Health Organization declared the swine flu pandemic as a public health emergency. This is the equivalent of Homeland Security's Code Red to alert us about possible terrorist attacks. And even more quickly a swine flu vaccine became available that is now threatening to become a mandatory institution. The risk with it becoming so readily available is one as simple as sloppy research and limited safety trials. British newspapers have reported that 60 percent of doctors refuse to take the vaccine, as they do not fully trust the safety and efficacy of the drug. One third of American health care professionals feel the same way while another third is not sure what to think.

Usually the FDA requires rigorous testing before any new drug becomes available but this seems not to be the case with the new N1H1 vaccine. According to the Center for Disease Control any new drug bound to be released to the public needs to pass three phases. Phase 1 includes immunogenicity and safety studies composed with a low number of subjects that are closely monitored. Phase 2 tests hundreds of individuals which include vaccine doses that range in the studies in order to determine the immunogenicity and safety of the different doses. Phase 3 requires the testing of thousands of subjects to establish critical information regarding the drug's effectiveness and crucial information regarding safety necessary for licensing. The current vaccine has not gone through any of these stages.

The new swine flu vaccine contains components called MF59 and ASO3 that the manufacturers of the drugs say are safe; yet, the FDA has not approved any other drug containing these two adjuvants. The FDA has also removed the use of thimerosal in vaccines as it contains high levels of mercury as it caused mercury poisoning. But still the H1N1 vaccine contains high levels of mercury which is a great concern for children, pregnant women and the elderly.

There is a lot of information out there, both for and against getting vaccinated. It is definitely difficult to decide who to believe as there is more than enough evidence out there that big pharmaceutical companies make billions a year from drug manufacturing. It is therefore easy to believe that it is all just one big conspiracy theory to force us into spending money on their product, but we have to keep in mind that a similar thing happened in 1976 with the swine flu vaccine then and the fact that there is not all that much difference in the current one. Hopefully the mandatory vaccinations legislation will not pass and everyone can choose for him/herself. I do strongly believe that we should all take the right steps to reduce the spreading of this vicious disease. However, I personally will not be in the front of the line with my children until I am certain the vaccine is safe with minimal side effects.
