Why Terry O' Quinn should have won the Emmy award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
In seasons one to five of "Lost", Terry O' Quinn played the role of John Locke, the former wheelchair bound box company worker. On the island, Locke found a brand new lease of life and constantly clashed with Jack Shepherd over leadership and the ongoing debate of science vs. fate. Locke later left the island and was killed by Ben Linus but his body was taken back when the other escaped Losties returned, at which point it was taken over by the Smoke Monster.
Terry O'Quinn was always a great actor but he really came into his own in season six, portraying a much darker character. The Smoke Monster was somehow a million miles from John Locke and yet not all that different. It seemed to feed off Locke's inner bad guy but the sinister look in his eyes was something we didn't see much of before the change.
Having the ability to play such a complex character with apparent ease is the reason that O'Quinn was nominated and for him not to take away the award is, in my humble opinion, outrageous.
When the list of nominations was revealed, many "Lost" fans were annoyed that Nestor Carbonell was not given the nod for his role as Richard Alpert - but while he is a fantastic actor, perhaps a nomination for an outstanding performance in just a few episodes was not quite as deserved as Terry O'Quinn's brilliance in every episode.
Michael Emerson was also up for the Emmy for the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series this year. Emerson as Ben Linus is unarguably incredible and had he won, I would have been thrilled but denying them both feels like a slap in the face for all those who worked hard on making the show as legendary as it is.
Terry O'Quinn was the most deserving nominee - much more than Matthew Fox deserved his Best Actor nomination (no disrespect meant, I love Matthew Fox, I just felt the nomination was there just for the sake of it) - and missing out on it when he was exceptional on "Lost" this year is just plain wrong.
