Why it is Time for Evander Holyfield to Quit Boxing

Todd Hicks
Are you one who keeps up with Evander Holyfield, a heavyweight boxer? He was one of the best at what he does. Have you noticed I am emphasizing the word 'was'? He is no longer one of the best at his sport.

I sometimes ask, "What is he doing?" As they say, "All good things must come to an end." It is time for him to step aside for those in the new generation. You will learn why he should retire from boxing.

First Reason why he should do this: He is getting old. He is almost fifty years old for crying out loud. Come on!

Second Reason why he should do this: He is just a shell of his old self. He is slipping and his skills are diminishing. He is losing fights more regularly, even to low-caliber fighters.

Third Reason why he should do this: He is taking a big risk on his health and ability to function well in life. The longer he stays in the game, the more he risks accumulating serious brain damage.

Fourth Reason why he should do this: He is embarrassing himself and his sport as he is not what he used to be. This is a shame.

Fifth Reason why he should do this: He has had his "fifteen minutes of fame" and he does not have anything left to prove. He has been the heavyweight champion and he has won a lot of money. Someone should ask him, "What more could you possibly want?"

Sixth Reason why he should do this: Former heavyweight champs Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson had the sense to walk away. After not feeling great at the end of a match, Bowe decided to quit while saying he did not want to get hit anymore. Lewis walked away for good while saying he had nothing left to prove and that he wanted to go out on top.

He also realized that he risked incurring brain damage if he stuck around too long. Tyson became frustrated during his last match and quit, knowing he had nothing left. He retired while saying he was not going to embarrass himself or the sport.

Seventh Reason why he should do this: He needs to move on for peace of mind. By doing this, he will see there is a life for him beyond boxing.

You have learned reasons why Evander Holyfield should retire from boxing.

Evander still has the heart of a lion, but little else. What he can offer boxing now should be as a manager, not fighter. His time has past.
