Why Toddler Toys Should Be Fun and Educational

Ms. Marie
At an early age the mind is very flexible, and whatever a toddler sees, hears, touches or receives from his surroundings will have an effect on specific abilities. A toddlers environment and surroundings will help develop his cognitive skills, social, and emotional skills. There are two very specific reasons for designing toys for toddlers that are educational. The first is fun play, learning has to be fun for the toddler in order for him to grow and appreciate the process of learning new skills. Secondly, the development of skills at an early age will assist in the development of a child's motor and cognitive skills. Toddler toys should be fun and educational.

Toddlers begin flexing muscles, exploring, and testing boundaries because everything is new to them, and it is very important to keep a healthy supply of toys available that will assist in creative growth. Toddlers can be extremely active as they begin to explore the world. They are especially interested in using their hands and fingers, which is good because it helps develop the small muscles.

A toddler will begin imitating people and wanting to play with others. They are curious about every thing they see and love to explore. For example, it is normal behavior for a girl to become fascinated with trucks and cars, they enjoy spinning the wheels, pushing it, and imitating the sound of a motor or horn just a much as a boy. It is okay for boys to play with dolls, they learn the body parts, how to be gentle and show affection just like a girl would. This should not be discouraged.

Toys For Toddler Development
Blocks are great for learning shapes, stacking, counting, and becoming familiar with colors, numbers or letters if they have them. Stuffed animals, teach children to be affectionate, and they become aware of the feeling of different textures. Push or pull toys teach them about cause and effect. Wooden puzzles exercises their memory. Balls, dolls, pedal toys, water toys, climbing toys, and wagons are all great for toddler development, and they are fun. Tricycles and ride on toys help develop large muscles and increase coordination. Sand and water toys let toddlers explore and experience size, texture, feel, weight and shapes.

Books, Musical Toys and Toys That Make Sounds
A toddler will enjoy listening to you read the same story again and again because they love hearing a favorite story. Musical toys, short songs, and toys with motion are other things that toddlers are interested in, although, their memories are not fully developed and they only remember a few words to a song they like. However, by singing it frequently you will assist in strengthening their memory skills, parents encourage memorization by repeating song lyrics.

Pop up books, and pages with pictures, colors, letters, and shapes are great learning tools for toddlers. By allowing your little one to turn the page you are helping them use small muscles in the hands that are still developing. Your two year old is ready for books with many shapes and colors, and three year old toddlers are ready to start learning letters and numbers. When a young child is looking at a book they are absorbing all the colors, shapes, letters and pictures, let them look at each page as long as they need to.

This is a great opportunity to begin teaching them the names of things. As they recognize pictures and you tell the the name they will start associating the name with that picture. Remember, that two and three year old tots have wonderful imaginations, and they may be very talkative, be a good listener and you will encourage your child's creativity.
