Why Try?

A Poetic Pining on Low-Cal Dining

Linda Ann Nickerson

"The second day of a diet
is always easier than the first.
By the second day,
you're off it."
Jackie Gleason
(1916 - 1987)

Another crunchy bar can't hurt.
Perhaps I'll just untuck my shirt
To hide the evidential tummy.
Chocolate is so very yummy.

I cannot snap my favorite jeans;
The side seams, they are splitting.
So you can keep those jelly beans,
The sugar craze, I'm quitting.

Who knows why I even try;
My cravings just intensify
For cookies, brownies, fresh-baked pie.
Step off the scale, and watch me cry.

My body's craving more hot fudge,
Although the dial will not budge.
I'll weigh myself again on Monday.
Tonight, I'm slurping down a sundae.

Maybe I will just skip dinner.
That would make me so much thinner.
I'll have my cake and eat it too.
What's a dieter to do?
