There are a few reasons why today's twenty-somethings are still living with their parents. A few of the reasons are their saving money, just graduated from college, don't have any other options, or they don't want to leave.
Many young adults are using the benefits of living with their parents to put money aside so they can eventually get their own place. Many college graduates move back in with their parents until they are able to get a steady job and enough money to make it on their own. Young adults who have the goal of moving out as quickly as possible will benefit from living with their parents. One of the benefits they receive is being able to save money that would have been used for living expenses such as utilities and rent. Young adults that have the goal of moving out, and work hard to achieve it, will not stay in their parent's home for a very long time.
Some adults are living with their parents because they have no other options. This could be college graduates that are having a hard time finding a job or non-college graduates that are also having a hard time finding a job. Living at home with their parents gives both of these groups of people a chance to make it on their own as long as they don't take advantage of the living situation. When they find a job they will be able to save money to buy their own place and pay off some of their debts if they have any.
Several young adults are taking advantage of the living situation with their parents. Many of these adults do not have the intentions of moving out of their parents homes. Many of these parents have probably made the mistake of treating their adult children like kids by doing everything for them such as cooking, cleaning, and paying their bills. These young adults have become too spoiled and do not want to move out because they have it so easy. They do not see anything wrong with depending on their parents to do things for them.
There are a few downsides to living with you parents. A few downsides are lack of privacy and the potential of being treated like a child.
Twenty-somethings who have legitimate reasons for staying with their parents and have a desire to move into their own place will not take advantage of their living situation. But young adults who do take advantage of living with their parents will not benefit from it because they are only hurting themselves and probably won't have the skills to make it on their own.
