Why "Twilight" and "New Moon" Aren't Great Movies

The other day, I was talking to my friend on the phone about Twilight. Now, neither of us are die-hard twilight fans. Our rooms are not plastered with pictures of Robert Pattinson and posters of Taylor Lautner (no matter how gorgeous his ripped muscles may be) definitely do not grace our walls. We were talking about how much we enjoyed reading the books . . . that is, until we saw the movies. During this conversation, we finally came to a conclusion as to why we cannot stand the movies.

In the books, we are privy to all of Bella's most private thoughts, all of her feelings, every emotion. In the movie, although they try to convey a sense of what is going on inside Bella's head, we do not get the feeling of love or happiness or passion. The whole feeling of both of the movies is dark and overcast. Of course, you feel that in the book too, but in the book Bella is actually capable of feeling happiness. Edward makes her happy, and even though the backdrop of the book is gloomy Forks, Washington, you feel that Bella is truly, happily in love.

In the movies, we are also not able to see Bella's sarcastic side, her funny, joking personality. Throughout the movies, Kristen Stewart portrays her as a slightly depressed, moody girl who could care less about what is going on around her.

Then, there is Edward. In the books, he is devastatingly handsome and funny - not creepy and pathetic. I am not saying that Robert Pattinson did not do a good job at the part, he is probably as close to the description in the book as anyone could get while not actually being a glistening, perfect, gorgeous vampire, but you have to admit that he is missing that 'perfection' quality that Edward has in the book.

Even in the second movie, when Bella is supposedly heartbroken because Edward has left her, you do not feel bad for her. You don't feel the pain she feels in the book, she just withdraws into herself and becomes more depressed and un-relatable than ever. When she wakes up in the middle of the night in the movie, screaming because he left her, you don't feel sad - just awkward and uncomfortable. And it is very unbelievable that Bella would choose Edward over Jacob because, let's face it, Jacob is absolutely gorgeous and sweet, not scary and skinny like Edward.

So, maybe amazing books should just be left as books. The Twilight Sage movies were mediocre, but they do not have any of the qualities that make the books so relatable and touching.
