Why Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Will Sell More Than Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune came out on November 19, 2007. The Playstation 3 exclusive title became a critical hit with its unique mix of platforming and third-person shooting. Even so, many thought that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune would have sold better on the marketplace even though it did well enough to warrant being a Greatest Hits game. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is coming to the Playstation 3 on October 13 of this year and will undoubtedly sell more than the original due to the following reasons.

Established Franchise
Although Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was developed by the world-renowned Naughty Dog (which is known for Crash Bandicoot on Playstation and Jak on Playstation 2), it was still a new intellectual property. As a result, many consumers don't know what to expect with the Playstation 3 exclusive title. Now that the first title has established itself as a critically-acclaimed and financially successful title, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a known commodity. Because of that, the sequel will end up selling more.

Better Press
Even though Uncharted: Drake's Fortune scored well with the media, the Playstation 3 exclusive game did not get much hype before it came out. That is because the game remained an unknown entity to the press in terms of quality even though they had the chance to preview the title multiple times before launch. It wasn't until that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was finally released that both fans and critics realized how great the game is.

This wouldn't be the case with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves as the press is already praising the game. Not to mention that the public multiplayer beta is already quite a hit with testers. Because of the increased exposure, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will certainly sell more than Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Multiplayer
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune only has a single-player mode. To further compound the problem, it was a relatively short game. As a result, many consumers decided to not buy the Playstation 3 exclusive game and instead played it through other means via second hand exchanges. Not only will Uncharted 2: Among Thieves be longer than the first game, the upcoming title also contains competitive and cooperative online multiplayer modes. With more added value, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will end up selling more than the original.

Playstation 3 Slim
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves also has the advantage of selling to a much bigger user base. When Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was released in 2007, the amount of Playstation 3s in household was quite small. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, on the other hand, is selling to a bigger user base (around 25 million) that is quickly growing due to the recent price drop and Playstation 3 Slim announcement. Thanks to that and other factors, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves can easily outsell Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
