Why the United States Should Increase Border Security and Add a Full Border Fence

Every year, approximately 14 thousand women and children are brought illegally through the US- Mexico border by human traffickers, says the International Center of Migration, Counter Trafficking Unit. These people are most often brought into the United States purely for the purpose of cheap labor or prostitution. According to the Coalition Against Trafficking in the United States, Mexico is the number one source for young females that will be sold into a type of prostitution slavery.

As it was simply put in a press release by the Minuteman Civil Defense Core, a volunteer group dedicated to lobbying for prevention of illegal border crossings, a border fence would limit drug and sex trafficking. This is also common sense, a fence helps stop people. And increasing border patrol troops will only help the matter, putting more eyes on the border to help catch these offenders.

Some people arguing in negation to adding a full border fence may say that illegal immigrants have a right to be here. I'm not saying that they don't, I am simply saying that those people illegally bringing other people here to use for labor or prostitution purposes need to be stopped, and increasing border patrol and adding a border fence will do just that. Some other arguments against this idea might be that a full border fence will prevent animals from migrating and getting to sources of water. I will refute this point by saying that animal species have adapted to various conditions over the years, and there is nothing to stop them from finding a new source of water or a new path upon which to travel. Also, some people could say that a full border fence would put the safety of those people trying to enter this country illegally in jeopardy. However, you must consider that border patrol agents would be monitoring this fence and that the number of illegal immigrants that could possibly be put in danger is much smaller than the number of lives that would be saved if we built a full border fence.

In addition, in a May 1, 2008 poll of Texans, 52% supported adding a full border fence, while only 37% were opposed to this suggestion. This just goes to show that the vast public opinion by those that would be most likely to be affected by the addition of more border patrol agents and a full border fence is that they are in favor of the idea and would support legislation if it was presented.

With these points in mind, I must urge you to support the addition of more border patrol agents and of a full border fence at the United States-Mexico border.
