The first Gulf War was clearly one of merit and not of American's getting oil cheap as was forwarded by those not in agreement with the UN backing the ousting of Saddam from Kuwait. The UN and Bush the Elder built a damn near worldwide coalition that ousted Saddam's forces from Kuwait with few coalition deaths in what has been described as one of the few times the UN actually did what it was chartered to do.
But that effort, even when backed by most of the world, brought us trouble. Recall our former friend, Usama bin Laden, who had been an ally of ours in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, turned against us. One of his stated reasons for the first World Trade Center attack was the US's presence on Islamic soil. Seems even when we infidels were freeing Muslims we are too dirty to be allowed on the sands Islam rests upon.
Now we have Libya's own little nutball, whose name I will spell "Cadafi" because no one on Earth can agree on a proper spelling, pissing off the world with his actions to remain in power. And now the Muslim world agrees a no fly zone should be enforced to stop Cadafi from bombing the rebels trying to overthrow him. Can anyone guess as to which nation will be looked to carry the load of enforcing the no fly zone? Anyone? That's right - the Infidel United States of America. And therein lies the problem.
If one of our planes flies over Libya the fuel for the "Infidel occupying Islamic soil" will rear its head yet again. We have enough trouble right now and recent history tells us even when begged to help we anger and fuel the radical elements. I am merely offering that we demonstrate we actually have learned a lesson from history. Given the mess in the Islamic world and the hatred for the US that already exists, any US military intervention in Libya may indeed have even more horrid consequences.
On the American political landscape, why are the more radical lefties, usually the for sure dovish type, so eager to see us enforce a no fly zone? Could it be because they know disorder on a worldwide scale is a helping hand for their ideological desires? I know that sounds paranoid, but examining history and the words from the left leads to few other conclusions. There are many on the more radical left that even see our involvement in Afghanistan to be unwarranted and evil in purpose, to say nothing of Bush taking us into Iraq, even when their political pals, the Democrat caucus, demanded TWO votes for Democrats to show they were all for ousting Saddam. We all know the political hay the left made with that, right?
Add in Cadafi seems to be defeating the Libyan rebels. If Cadafi is winning as indeed it seems he is, our assisting the rebels could easily be seen as American attempts at the dreaded "regime change," mantra. This is a no win situation for the US no matter what we do. If we stick our noses in it the repercussions will be akin to the aftershocks in Japan...damage piled on top of damage. When faced with a "no win no matter what" it's best to do nothing. At least then the evil attributed to us will because we DID NOT intervene and while that will upset some, it beats the Hell out of being in more controversy for the opposite action.
The wise American remembers the radical left will have more fodder for the idiotic "war for oil" crap. The left is always screaming what evil bullies the US is. Let's not give them any more fodder for that denigration. As the Libyan situation is a "no win" no matter what we do, perhaps we can show we have learned from history. Cadafi is winning and any intervention of the US if rife with major pitfalls and at this point it seems academic anyway. Oh, and we are broke anyway, so let's not spend even more money to intervene. It will only make us poorer as well as giving more fodder to use against the nation as an evil enterprise bent on worldwide hegemony.

LOL DON! I LOVE IT!
Finally, a point we can agree on! Well said, Whip...We don't need to send our military into another "nation building" conflict.
Can we make bullets out of bacon? Maybe at least dip our bullets in bacon fat? That might get their attention.
You are correct.
I would love to see his ass hung but this isn't our fight. If the Left wants us over there fighting then it's the worst thing for the country plain and simple.
