Why Using a Name Tag in International Business Meetings May Give You an Advantage

Laurie Meekis
When working with an international company, you often have to deal with people from many different countries in business meetings. These may be attended by people who speak different languages. Names that are common and easily pronounced in one place may pose great difficulty in interpretation to someone from another country. A name tag would help alleviate some of the confusion faced in cross-cultural communications.

Names are important, especially when dealing with another culture. If business associates make the effort to learn someone's name and pronounce it correctly, it gives people dealing with each other a favourable impression. First impressions can be crucial in the business world, especially between cultures. Since some names are more difficult to remember, the presence of a name tag helps the viewer to reinforce the correct name of the wearer of the name tag.

If the other languages have a written alphabet that is not easily read by someone who does not speak the language, wearing a name tag with the translated version of the wearer's name, makes it easier for people of different cultures to get a good grasp of the name of a business client. It is a diplomatic move that shows respect for the person with whom you are dealing.

Small things can make a very large impression on a prospective client or co-worker. Taking the time to learn their name correctly could make an instant positive impression on someone from another country. Anybody working in international settings understands the difficulties that dealing across cultures and countries can create. Starting off on the right foot is very important. Learning a name can be a good step.

Being placed in a business dealing in which you have to not only work with the business at hand, but also with the differences in culture, may be very overwhelming. Any edge you can get in a business setting, particularly if there is competition involved between you and someone else, may make a difference. The smallest things can sometimes be the deciding factor in a competitive business market.

Wearing a name tag in this situation can help to open up communications too. Remember the people you are dealing with may be in the same boat that you are. A small thing like a name tag can help break down barriers in communication. Wearing a name tag reinforces the ability to remember and pronounce a person's name.

An additional advantage a name tag can provide is identification of the company they or you represent. When there are multiple companies present in a negotiation, a name tag would enable each viewer to know which company and country the wearer represents.

well you can also make yourself known at the meeting and stick the sticky tag on your forehead lol

I agree it is very helpful. However I won't wear ones that have pins that make holes in my clothes and the stick on ones often just don't stick.

then get a clear plastic name badge with a pin or clip you can buy at any office supply shop and have it handy at your next meeting. You just simply pin or clip on your badge and stick your little tag on that and presto your clothes are that much more happier with you.

Great article! I am just horrible with names and wish everyone was forced to wear a name tag! LOL

Yes, but name tags ruin clothes, especially the cheap stick-on kind. (For those who may wonder, even affluent international organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank have been known to use the icky-sticky kind of name tags!)
