You do not have to take an expensive hotel room in the city, you can get an inexpensive hotel in the suburbs, and hop a train for a quick twenty minute trip. No matter what time you visit the city there is always something to do without spending a lot of money. There are free concerts, there are walking tours, and history abounds in the architecture alone. If you care to splurge a little the museums are fabulous, especially the planetarium, and that is almost an all day adventure alone. You will find the "United Nations" in New York so to speak and see a large diverse population in ethnic garb, and depending what part of the city you go to, you will also have an ethnic feast.
The best way to see the city is with comfortable walking shoes because there is enchantment at almost every street corner. You have people hawking their wares on the street corners, and people offering food from their native countries. Take a leisurely stroll through Central Park, and you will be amazed that such a beautiful area can be in such a hub bub of a place. You will find mimes on the street as well as magicians, parades and street fairs, and of course we can not forget Rockefeller Center in the Winter, with its gorgeous Christmas Tree and the Wohlman Rink. New York is not just about Broadway and expensive eateries, and fancy shops we have some of the best thrift stores and discount stores around.
If you spent two weeks walking through the city you will still not run out of things to see and do. If you do decide to stay in the city, there are some hotels that are not all that expensive, and on weekends are even less because they cater to the business traveler. Where else can McDonalds deliver but in New York if you get hungry in the middle of the night. To enjoy New York at it sfinest all you need to do is either walk out of your hotel room, or out of the train station, go one direction or the other and keep walking, you will be amazed at all there is to see and do. The buildings the excitement, the activities, something for old and young alike.
