Why You Need to Watch "Modern Family"

Now in the second season, "Modern Family" is an entertaining comedy show that is relatable to everyone who watches. The mockumentary-style show gives viewers the feeling they are peeking into the everyday lives of the Pritchett and Dunphy families. The style of filming gives each character a chance to connect with the audience directly, either to give a history of the situation, comment on the events or simply share their true feelings.

What is a modern family? In this case, you have Jay Pritchett, played by the hilarious Ed O'Neill. He has two children, Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) and Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). Jay's married to Gloria (Sofia Vergara) a feisty, much younger woman and helping to raise Manny (Rico Rodriquez), her son. Claire is married to Phil (Ty Burrell) and together they are raising three children while Mitchell lives with his partner (Eric Stonestreet) and together they are raising their adopted daughter, Lily.

When you throw all of these individuals together, you have a hilarious depiction of what a modern, blended family really is. Gloria, who comes from Columbia and quite the attractive wife, is a perfect emotional counterpart to Jay, who acts as the rational, level-headed patriarch of the family. Manny, a pre-teen who is smarter beyond his years is often shown as helping Jay bridge the cultural differences between him and Gloria.

Mitchell, one of Jay's children, has spent five years in a relationship with partner Cameron, who is more emotional and worrisome than Mitchell. This leaves the two to have plenty of comedic scenes that everyone in a relationship can identify with.

Claire's marriage to Phil illustrates what the everyday family is like. Phil, who wants to be the cool dad all his kids want to hang out with, often appears goofy in his attempts to be current with what his adolescent children are doing. Claire, the overprotective mom, makes many of her child-raising decisions based on her own experiences and because of those experiences she seems to know exactly what her children are up to. Pair Claire and Phil's parenting style together and you have an interesting dynamic the kids always seem to get around.

"Modern Family" is an award-winning show and appeals to a range of ages because of the storylines and how the characters react to them - and what makes it funny is that chances are, a viewer has done the same thing. Take for example, the Halloween episode on October 27th, where Mitchell decides to dress up for Halloween upon hearing his new law firm is allowing a costume day. When arriving to work and only seeing two people dressed up, he tries to remove his costume before anyone notices - without much success. The scene is hilarious because there is probably an instance where you've dressed up for something only to get there and realize it didn't go as planned. How Mitchell deals with the situation is comedic gold.

Watch "Modern Family" on ABC at 9 pm ET on Wednesday.
