The U.S. is starting to fade from the limelight of super world power status thanks to our weakening economy. The Iraq War has had billions of dollars pumped in to it, your tax dollars. Now consider this: Switzerland is neutral almost all of the time. World War I? Neutral. World War II? Neutral. A possible World War III being stirred up by Israel and Iran right now? The odds say Switzerland will remain neutral. This means less money is pumped into their military funds and more for the people.
On the subject of the people, they do get their tax money back socially. Here in the United States, public transportation is very poor. The buses do run on time and such things, but the quality of the buses and the type of people who ride the public transportation are not the same people riding the buses in Spain or Switzerland. In America, it can be said that the working class rids the bus. Middle and high class drive their own cars. Simply because of this, the buses in America are discriminated against and proper enhancements have not taken place. In Switzerland, everybody rides the bus, because of this their governments put their money where their citizens are going to use it best.
Everything trickles back down to economics. U.S. expenditures focus on militarizing while Swiss expenditures are on public services and their top-notch universal healthcare system. What? Universal healthcare? No, not the kind Senator Clinton is promising for 2008. In Europe, the system works a little differently. Yes, you pay higher taxes, but when your 2-year-old catches pneumonia and you take her to the hospital, it is free of charge as well as your medications. The hospitals are cleaner and order is omnipresent. No waiting in the emergency room with a bleeding eye for 2 hours. They are highly stocked with doctors and one is always there to treat you as soon as possible.
Switzerland is the bellybutton of Europe. In other words, one weekend you could take your family to France and the next weekend maybe you'll go eat Sauerkraut in Berlin. You have access to over 30 countries just by driving your car into the next one over. The U.S. cannot offer you that. Everything here in America is accessible through planes which are much more expensive than just rolling along the autobahn on your gas tank. Italy tomorrow and maybe Austria next week. Need I say more?
Yes, hardships are encountered when people make a big move. Sometimes you have to learn a new language and maybe be a couple of weeks without a job, but it is all about adjusting. But why Switzerland above all other European countries? Well, you do not have to worry about the Euro and its fluctuation because the Swiss Franc is pretty stable. You have a handful of cantons to choose from to live in and four national languages you can choose from. Have a propensity for Italian? Move to the south of Switzerland. Deutch? The northern part of Switzerland is German. Parlez vous francais? The west of Switzerland is French. There is also a small section in Switzerland where people speak Romansch, near the Austrian border.
Switzerland's quality of life is rated best in the world, with Zurich being the best city to live in the world closely followed by Geneva. You will appreciate life more if you change your lifestyle to a Swiss one. It is more laid back, the food is better than American food, and the option of going green is easier to make in such an environmentally friendly country. Real estate is just as expensive in the United States, but people have higher salaries per capita in Switzerland. Ever heard the term, Swiss bank? There is a reason why they are so internationally renowned, thanks to their really generous interest rates.
There is something is Switzerland for everyone, from the warm climate in the south to the sparkling lakes near France. Skiing in the Alps, career availability almost everywhere, and finally, your taxes will be doing you some good. You can catch me in Switzerland after I graduate college.

Why would you ever want to leave Switzerland for the US? Are you a masochist and like to suffer? Seriously, count your blessings that you're Swiss. I am in the US on a temporary work contract and just paid 100K in taxes to the US goverment - guess what I see in return? Not a thing. No social benefits whatsoever. Not to mention that I have pay close attention to what I am buying in a supermarket, as almost anything edible in the States will come pretreated with growth hormones or antibiotics, so even to eat healthy you have to pay premium prices for organic food. Stay your lucky behind in Switzerland and have a delicious MIlka chocolate every day for me, becuse over here you'd be eating nasty tasting Hersheys "chocolate" instead.
which country used taxpayer money to kill over 100,00 non-combatant civillians in the past decade?
A: Switzerland
B:USA
Im Swiss and i want to move to the US... somebody wanna exchange ??
I am about to move to switzerland next year. I was born in South America and spend more than 10 years in US...
It was pretty interesting to read your article!!! I agree on all our points but still i need to thank the US for a lot of things I got through these year ... eg: my College Degree

I dream of living in switzerland after I graduate. It might be a little easier for me though, being Canadian and already speaking french. I just don't know how I could ever leave my family and the ocean, though!
Good luck with that. Swiss citizenship is one of the hardest to get. And the culture here is such that you--and those grandchildren you are so concerned about--will forever remain an "outsider", not really Swiss.
Believe me Fabiola has a point. I have been there many times and although expensive and perhaps a little insular it is efficient, attractive and ver friendly. Just compare it to the UK and you will understand!
What a ridiculous article. I'm dumber for having read it. Let me ask the South American born, North American raised, and resident of Deerfield Beach, FL a question: who is paying for your college education? Probably the social program of the USA that takes my tax dollars and pays for the college education of immigrants. How ridiculous is that. I am paying for your college education in the USA so that you can criticize the USA. Please drop out of school here in the awful USA and enroll in college in Switzerland right now. Go there now. Let's see if their programs cater to the needs of immigrants...
Look. I have to take my anger out somewhere and I'm sorry it has to be this. I am so angry at Switzerland right now. Why the hell do people move there? The U.S is NOT fading from superpower status. The war is NOT going to be WWIII.
