Why We Hate Liberals

Even Liberals Hate Liberals

Bryan Belrad
I am a moderate: one of those odd, fence-jumping, middle of the road folk who doesn't subscribe to the idea that our thoughts have to be color-coded or we are traitors to our country. I hold some liberal views, like equality for all, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. And I hold some conservative views, such as 'equality means equality, not minority advantage'.

For some time now, I've been trying to figure out why it is exactly that liberals and conservatives hate each other so very much; why it is that whenever a member of one side will take a stand on an issue, members of the other side will choose the opposite just on principle. It is idiotic, stupid, counter-productive, and is, more than anything else (even the terrorists), destroying America.

I think I've finally put my finger on the key difference between the two that's got them so polarized. Conservatives, as a rule, don't like new ideas. They want to 'conserve' the status quo. That isn't to say that they are opposed to change, just that change should follow the existing rules put in place for that change to come about. For example, conservatives believe that corrupt government officials should be taken from power by election or impeachment, not by revolution.

Liberals, on the other hand, are all about new and different ideas. Rather than focus on what they believe, they want to focus on what others think and feel. They advocate the idea of 'walking in another man's shoes' before judging him. For example, Barack Obama wants us to consider the hate and violence that Rev. Wright had to live through before we condemn him for his anger.

Think about it for a minute. If I'd had to live through what he did, I'd be [upset] too.

Both groups believe in freedom, they just have opposite philosophies in reaching toward that goal. Conservatives, of their nature, are centered on self; 'What do I believe?' Liberals focus on society as a whole; 'What is best for us?'

But Liberals do have a very large problem on their hands: The evolution of their views, looking at the feelings of groups, rather than individual people, has led them to an unavoidable paradox. Specifically, I'm referring to that most heinous of crimes, to the Liberal mind: Insensitivity.

Both groups do have a seemingly infinite capacity for hypocrisy, including the infamous name-calling, which usually involves both sides saying something to the effect of: "They are the evil ones! We would never say anything bad about the other side, like they do (such as calling them 'evil')!" However, the Liberals go a little farther, because, as it turns out, they have wound up in a position where they actually have to oppose themselves.

That's right: Liberals are stuck in a position where they have no choice but to oppose themselves! No wonder so many people are pushed to the Right, just out of sheer disgust.

How can this be? Well, I'm glad you asked.

You see, Liberals believe in Tolerance. They want to understand where everyone is coming from before they will even think about judging what they stand for. They want to know why the Arabs are so angry at the US, instead of just bombing them into oblivion. They want to know why so many Blacks are so very racist against Whites, instead of simply scolding them for claiming to be against racism, but embracing that very thing themselves.

That's all well and good, as far as it goes. After all, everyone has the right to question, and what harm comes from a little enlightenment about how 'the other guy' sees things?

But, because Tolerance is, to borrow a phrase from the Bible-thumpers, "The Way, the Truth, and the Light" for Liberals, anybody who even seems to question the practice is viewed as "Intolerant" instantly. Thus, we are left with a Left that tells us to question, as long as we don't question their moral authority. They say they want to know the views of others, but reject any that disagree with their own pre-determined conclusions out of hand. They want us to Tolerate any opinion under the sun - except those opinions that aren't ones of Tolerance; their brand of Tolerance, specifically.

They want us to consider all sides, but will happily make a snap-judgment about anyone who slips a toe over that very line.

Clearly, that doesn't make any friggin sense. It goes way beyond mere hypocrisy, and deep into the realm of flat-out irrationality.

We're supposed to listen to Rev. Wright tell us why he hates America, and that's good. But if any of us dares to pipe up with reasons why he might be wrong, we're being "Intolerant"? Does anybody else see a problem here???

Today, we live in an age of "offensiveness", where we have to be Sensitive to the sensibilities of others. We can't curse in public, or even avow that we hate all racists, whether they be White or Black. We can't even hate hate, because that's hateful.

Anything at all might be arbitrarily deemed "offensive". Yet it is that very practice, of labeling valid, reasonable opinions as "offensive", that is itself far more offensive to most rational people.

"We have to be Tolerant of the views of others," we are told. But, what about our views? Do they mean squat next to the angry Black man's? Or even Osama bin Laden's? How on Earth can anybody tell me that all our ideas are supposed to be equal, when Mr. 'I'm gonna kill you all' gets more credence than we do?

Now, don't get me wrong here. Mr. bin Laden absolutely has the right to keep spouting off his murderous drivel for as long as he likes (until the Marines figure out which cave he's hiding in, anyway). What I take offense to is that anybody would DARE to tell me that my own thoughts - that said Marines should be given medals - are Intolerant.

It has come to a point where the advocates of "Tolerance" have become the most Intolerant people of all. That's the paradox that the Liberals are stuck with - and even a goodly number of them disagree.

That's why even the Liberals hate the Liberals, because, as Liberals, they are philosophically opposed to Intolerance, and it is they themselves who are the most Intolerant of any single group today. The can not, and will not, Tolerate Intolerance - even from themselves.

What's worse, because they cannot Tolerate their own Intolerance, they find themselves being Intolerant of their own Intolerance towards everyone else's Intolerance - and all in the name of keeping anybody from being "offended"!

Well, guess what? That "offends" me, and millions of other Americans - so put a 'censored' label on it, and stop doing it!

Let us instead return to a nation that promotes the free exchange of ideas, no matter how distasteful, because, at the end of the day, Barack Obama is right. We should consider the hell Rev. Wright had to live through before passing judgment on him. But, at the same time, we have to keep our own views and life experiences in perspective, or we risk losing ourselves and what we believe in, in order to favor what amounts to somebody else telling us what we think.

And that, my friends, is the very antithesis of Free Speech and tolerance for all ideas.

  • Liberals believe in Tolerance for the ideas of others, and therefore hate Intolerance.
  • Intolerant ideas are Intolerable.
  • Thus, the Libs find that they are being Intolerant of others, which is Intolerable to them.
It isn't "the socialist liberal scum" or "the fundamental, extremist conservative nazis", but the "bitter partisanship" itself that is destroying us. We think that only an idiot could side with "them", so we oppose. Period.

A suggested edit "Both groups believe in totalitarian government, they just have opposite philosophies in reaching toward that goal."

Liberals believe in freedom? Hardly! They support freedom in precisely two areas, drug use and abortion. Everything else they want regulated and taxed as much as possible. You re correct about one thing though. The liberal justifies his disdain of liberty by saying it is for the greater good.

I think the author's just discussing charicatures of the left and right. I see "liberal" and "conservative" as just being umbrella terms. I don't really see either extreme in either of the articles as being true archetypes of the left and the right. The terms at some point are meaningless and arbitrary, despite the fact that some people may identify with the labels as much as they do. Ultimately I really don't hate people who identify with either side. People should really just get to know eachother more, as opposed to making prejudgements based off of superficial terms.

Very nice read. Despite leaning left a lot, this makes me feel like I am more in the middle than I thought. Thanks, it's good to have some food for thought.

    Bryan, great article
Just wanted to make a note for people, who wrote comments how Bryan's ideas "don't make any sense". They don't make any sense, because you did not understand them. And you did not understand them because you didn't want to. Some of my liberal friends would call is "being narrowed minded". Or does in only apply to conservatives...? If you answered "yes" to this question, than read Bryant's article again, you might learn something.

    Liberals are gay

ya' oughtta take a writin' class so yer thinkin' becomes more clear, yar. Why don't you write down some COHERENT ideas, rather than babbling...I've wasted the last five minutes on my life, reading about your idiocy...Tolerance is the PROBLEM? What's next, people should just die to convenience disease? You moron!

  • Aaron1/25/2010

Oh, nnobody is infrimgng on free speech as well.

  • Aaron1/25/2010

This whole article is nonsense. You cannot read the minds of entire groups of people. How about listening to peoples arguments and making judgment from there.
