"Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life:
The longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the
suffering of mankind."
-Bertrand Russell
Throughout time the question has been asked, "Why are we (I'm) here?" And throughout my life, I have heard this same enquire from several individuals, from the innocence of a two year old. To the guilty on death row, as well as myself. "Why!"
Why were the planets created? Why is Earth the only planet in our solar system that has life? Why was I created? I suppose that everyone at some point in their life has wondered? This is usually, in times of heartache or some traumatic experience.
There are many possible educated, scientific and hypothetical answers to this often asked question. I guess to begin to form your own answer. You must first decide on how we were created. The two main beliefs are: God created us in his own image or. The: Big Bang Theory. If God created us, He obviously did so for a purpose. If we came to be through some type of particle explosion, is there a purpose? I personal would like to believe we were put here for a purpose.
Longing for love; The opening quote pretty much sums up my life to this point. I believe everyone wants to be loved. Even those who will not admit it and insist that they do not need anyone! In all of my committed relationships (well at least I was committed). I have always made it known that I am there for that person in everyway. Through "our" ups and downs, in sync or at odds with one another, you know "The long haul?" and willing to do whatever is in my power. Even without them having to ask, to make it known! In hopes that my actions will be reciprocated upon! Which in-turn will supply us with the foundation to give and receive the "love" that is essential in our personal, intimate and sexual relationships. As well as society on a whole. But sadly enough all of my "committed" relationships have ended in betrayal of my trust. Which I regret to say, that after each episode has manifested issues of trust for me. This affects each new attempt at creating something genuine. An ex once told me. "Randy maybe that is your purpose. To come into peoples lives, help them out until they get straight then move on!" This is one of those times of heartache, that make you ask. "Why are we here?"
Search for knowledge; Anyone who really knows me, knows that I'm a thinker. I often drift off in thought. Kind of "everywhere and nowhere at once", if you can understand that? I like to find out things for myself. Never was much for "he say-she say." I'm a avid reader, spend a lot of time in the library and online researching anything that may interest me. Not to exclude the opportunity or privilege of learning something new from someone with extensive life experience. This is when knowing when to keep your mouth shut and take instruction is purely beneficial! Sadly enough! I'm often met with resentment, when I attempt to share what little knowledge I have gained. With people under the impression that you think they are dumb, or. The ever popular "you think you know everything!" I try and make it a point not to put my "two cents" in where it is not needed or wanted. I know that sometimes people must make their own mistakes to learn, and even then some don't. But! If you could potentially harm yourself or others, isn't it the right and responsible thing to do to inform and share the knowledge there of? Or,"why are we here?"
Unbearable pity, for the suffering of mankind; Empathy, compassion, regret and mercy. Traits we all share, unfortunately some far less than others! From those persons who fail to see, not admit or are convinced that they do no wrong and have nothing to apologize for, "pitiful!" To the tragic death of an infant, who has not even had a chance at life, "pitiful!" To the person who has genuine honesty and love to share, but is continually cheated on and left alone, while the lying cheaters are clung to, "pitiful!" To the loved one who has gotten on their feet and turned their life around and is then brutally murdered. "Pitiful!" Etc, etc! These instances and others like it are traumatic enough to make you ask! "Why are we here!!"
Still in all, I guess each person must figure out their own purpose. Whether it be God or "Big Bang" how you got here. I have been told that it is more than likely, something that comes naturally to you and brings you joy while you do it. That may give you further insight on "why we are here?"
