Why Do We Love MTV's the Hills?

Spencer, Heidi, Brody and Lauren, if these names are familiar then you might just be a fan of one of the most popular reality shows on television. MTV's the Hills have catapulted its stars to instant fame. A spin off of Laguna Beach, the Hills has grown with its audience and offers viewers a look into the hectic, dramatic lives of the leading characters.

Set in Los Angeles, the Hills break out star, Lauren, is a fashion mogul in training. The cameras follow her from her internship at Teen Vogue to fashion school to enjoying night life with her friends. While this 20 something's life somewhat reflects the average college student's day to day living, the added ingredient that makes the Hills a can't miss show is the drama associated with the relationships between the characters.

Last season's finale left the audience wondering what would happen between best friends, Lauren and Heidi. Heidi's boyfriend, Spencer was not Lauren's favorite person. This alienated the girls and soon Heidi moved in with Spencer much to the dismay of Lauren. Heidi and Spencer are still together with rumors circulating on the net that their entire relationship and recent engagement is nothing more than a ploy for celebrity status and attention. One thing is for sure, this real life soap opera is racking up millions of viewers for MTV.

Much like the Real World, all of the characters live in grand apartments and condos with no real sign of what they do for a living. From Mercedes to Range Rovers, these young adults roll in style everywhere they go. While not completely relatable, the stars of the Hills are characters you either love or love to hate. Much like the trendy "team insert celebrity name here" shirts, you find yourself taking sides between the stars of the show. Perhaps the show is so popular because no matter your financial status or circle of friends, there is always drama in any group. We've all played the part of the friend who sees disaster coming in a relationship, only to have our advice ignored. Furthermore, who isn't chasing a dream of becoming a doctor, lawyer, college graduate, or like Lauren, a fashion designer? The Hills may take place in the celebrity studded city of Los Angeles, but every Monday night, the stars of the Hills become our friends and entertain us with 30 minutes of their reality.
