Why Do White People...?

Laurel Moore
Listening to Senator Barack Obama's speech on race in America, I had to agree with him. None of us are really capable of looking over our neighbor's fence and understand what they are truly going through. It is with this in mind, that I figured I would jot down a few things that baffles me about white people. These are things that I have discussed with other black people and we have been curious about for years. None of these are meant to be offensive, just my own observations and questions.

What is a time-out? I noticed a few of my Caucasian friends love to tell their children to take "time-outs". I have yet to see what benefit there is in allowing a child to sit in a corner or quiet place for a number of minutes. The only thing I think this allows for is letting the children think of other things to do once they are out of the time-out. I have seen a child come out of time-out and punch his sister in her eye. I think the quiet time that he was given allowed him to build up his strength and really lay one on his poor unsuspecting sister. None of my black friends engage in the whole time-out theory. I just need one success story.

Does writing letters actually accomplish anything? I have noticed that my white friends and coworkers usually end their horrible interactions with businesses with "...and I wrote a letter". Huh? A letter? I have not heard anything come of letter writing but an apology. I haven't heard of anyone getting their money back, complimentary service, or at the very least, a coupon. I tried writing a letter once and ended up madder than when I began the letter.

Why are your church services so early in the morning? I don't know what time white people usually get to church, but it has to be pretty early considering on my way to church services, I see them leaving theirs. How do you focus at 7 a.m. on various scriptures? I know that by the time our pastor stands, usually at around 12:30 p.m., most white people have had lunch and are back for the evening services.

One more thing and I promise I won't ask anymore questions of you good people. At least for today. As someone with a good dose of claustrophobia, I can't understand how you bring yourselves to get in a tanning bed. I have several friends that say it is very relaxing, but aren't you scared of the machine locking somehow and you ending up looking like a burnt french fry? How do you keep your hair from burning? Aren't you worried that you'll get up with all these impressions from the heating elements on your skin?

I honestly don't mean to offend. I actually want to know the answer to these things. Perhaps by asking the easy questions first, we can open the dialogue up and learn to like each other a little more. Considering the state of our country today, it is time.

man...I could add a few questions to this list myself. LOL It think it would be pretty interesting if people took this same kind of approach to reconcile the things we see but don't quite understand when observing different cultures. Maybe some of it is just genetic...years ago couldn't figure out why I used to love drinking imported beers and eating polish sausages and sauerkraut (you shoulda seen the looks I used to get from the brothas) I found out last year that my grandfather was German...it explained a lot :)

I'm white, and I have some of the same questions as well!

Good one! You certainly didn't offend me. Those are legitmate questions, alright. I'm only surprised you didn't have more questions. maybe a part two? I have more questions about white people than that and I'm white. Zany One, you're onto something - now expand on it! Thanks for yr article.

Time out is designed to create a generation of children with no fear of real consequences for bad behavior. This keeps the cops, courts, and prison systems humming along. Church early gets it out of the way of football and beer. Tanning beds help people look like someone else without going to the trouble of being outside.

I agree tanningbeds are extremely bad for all sorts of reasons. I tried it once and I got badly burned. I think we white folks want to look healthy??Now I just slather on the Revlon.
The time-out thing Is better than smacking the child: if in agitated state, it will calm things down a bit. This in contrast with smacking: the child screaming on top of his lungs, the parent getting more and more angry..etc.
The early church-services are mainly for the priest I think, that way he has the Sunday off.
Hope I explained some of your questions here.

Time Out is just a Caucasian thing??? Hmmm...we must run in different circles. My parent-friends all use this discpline tool and they come in all colors and nationalities. But to answer the question about time out itself: it enables the parent to get a five minute reprieve of having to deal with junior's antics and thus not fall into the trap of disciplining in anger. Also, for an introverted child it is considered a necessity as some misbehavior is brought on by over-stimulation in a group setting against which the introversion rebels as it can only handle so much.
