The Purpose of Each Wine Glass

Have you noticed at the market you'll find more wines then any other kind of liquor. Each bottle has something new and different to offer and a type of food to go with. Regardless of the price of the wine, why not make the most of each experience?

A multitude of glasses were designed by specialist to enhance the aroma and flavor of each type of wine. There are 2 elements that can affect this:

1. Temperature

2. Shape of glass

This is imperative to properly enhance the experience. This is most certainly the best and only way to bring out the bouquet of each wine.

Choosing

Wine glasses are shaped uniquely for each type of wine and a few different materials to enhance it. The thickness of a glass can affect it as well. This is what a good wine glass should consist of.

  • Colorless glass
  • Crystal
  • Half-crystal
  • Glass
  • Less than a millimeter thick
  • Long Stem

Shapes

Red, White, or Rose wines are the most popular and listed here are the shapes of glasses used for each kind to better the next bottle that you decide to crack open and enjoy.

White and Rose Wines Glasses

The figure shown in A is used for young white wines. The glass is designed to move the liquid to the edge of your tongue where it's most sensitive to sweetness. The height concentrates the aroma directly up to your scent glands.

The figure shown in B is for mature white wines. It is a wider figure allows for the complex smells of this type of wine. It is straight so that the liquid moves directly to the back and slightly to the sides of the mouth for a round flavorful experience.

As shown in figure C, young and crisp rose wines. It has a large lip which makes the liquid drip to the end of your tongue where the sweetness can truly be appreciated.

The glass in figure D is for the bodied and mature rose wines. This particular glass is used for enhancing the bouquet of aromas and sending the liquid to the sides of the mouth.

Red Wine Glasses

The glass in figure A is designed for directing the wine to the innermost part of your mouth. This is for young red wines. It does this to avoid the stinging feeling that this wine has on the gums and gives you a full flavor.

In figure B is the glass for mature red wines. In concentrates the wine's complexity of aroma directly to your scent glands in a similar fashion to the way the glass for young white wines does.

For the full bodied red wines the glass in figure C was created. It's the tallest of the wine glasses and quite narrow for its size. This design directs the liquid to the back of the mouth avoiding the gums and giving off an intensely pleasant scent.

The fullest bodied red wine and the very mature one are best in the glass in figure D. The enlarged lip directs the wine towards the tip of your tongue where the taste of sugar can be most appreciated.
