Why Winning American Idol Doesn't Always Guarantee Success

Valerie Lyles
When Kris Allen won the American Idol competition 4 weeks ago, the audience cheered, gave him a standing ovation and as usual, it was indeed an exciting moment for any aspiring singer. But now that it's over, the real work begins for Kris Allen. As to whether he succeeds or not, only time will tell. However, what is clear though that some past winners like Fantasia, Reuben Studdard, David Cooke and Jordan Sparks achieved only moderate success, while Taylor Hicks' album bombed. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood ended up with highly successful careers in the process, along the way winning numerous awards, especially the Grammys and outselling their counterparts.

Those who didn't win such as Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry, so forth, proved that without the American Idol crown, huge success was just around the corner. What makes these pattern of scenarios fascinating, instead of confusing, is because fame can be very fickle when you're trying to reach for the stars and in show business it's either you got it or you don't. Suddenly, as the American Idol, you're the new "sensation." You are also the buzz around the country and now making rounds on all the talk shows.

The aftermath has been sometimes a pressure cooker for some past contestants to recapture what had already been bestowed upon them in the first place. A problem that could arise is not learning the ins and outs of the music business industry. Like reading and understanding record company contracts before signing on the dotted line. Plus, watching out for certain clauses with stipulations and making sure you're taking care of business when it comes to your money, especially when dealing with managers, lawyers, and accountants, because the IRS is no joke. Another one, not facing up to the harsh realities of rejection in this business.

Reuben, Clay and Taylor also were dropped from their labels due to lack of record sales. However, Reuben Studdard regrouped. Instead of giving up, he got his house in order. Now Reuben has a new single and is performing on Broadway. In the true sense, American Idol remains very much a phenomenon, even Simon Cowell's strong criticism takes 1st place notice every time. Win or lose it's the stepping stone to opening up many doors. While others are still struggling just to get their demos heard. Sometimes though, as a recording artist you may not always have #1 hit songs or albums nor be in the top 10 charts; just ask Aretha Franklin, Rolling stones, Kenny Rogers, The Jackson, Temptations, Dolly Parton, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, etc. They too experienced bumps in their careers, and it happens to be that longevity is their nickname and somehow managed to crank out memorable songs.

The one lesson we should take from Kelly Clarkson is always acknowledge appreciation, thanking those (American Idol) for your steps into stardom.

Of course winning AI doesn't guarantee success, but I think Kris will do quite well. He'll sell what is expected from him and maybe more. He reminds me somewhat of Taylor Hicks, handsome, square faced, cleancut. I believe Hicks' first album went platinum world-wide eventually.

Gee, hasn't T.Hicks sold a million and a half records so far. Didn't his first single go golden? Doesn't he have a new album out? Wasn't he in "Grease" on Broadway? And didn't his appearance bring in an extra $150,000 per week?
