Why is My Wireless Internet Connection Slower Than My DSL Line?

Aaron Tadeo
If you have a wireless internet connection at home, you may be wondering why the connection is sometimes significantly slower than a DSL or another wired data connection even though they have the same rated speed or bandwidth. There are some common reasons why it is so.

I had a wireless internet connection at home a few years ago and it was rated at 384 kbps. So that should be roughly 48 kilobytes per second when downloading. However, the speed is intermittent and it sometimes slows down to as low as 20 kbps. When I had a wired 1.5 mbps DSL connection installed, the connection is constant unless there's a problem with the provider itself which is quite rare.

The most important thing you have to consider is interference. These are outside entities that can disrupt the internet connection. Wireless connection travels through empty space and things such as lightning, rain and wind can interfere with your signal. I had a wireless device on top of the roof that points directly to the towers of my provider. If it moves because of the wind, for example, the internet connection slows down since the device gets misaligned.

It can also depend on your setup. My old internet connection has a device on the roof and a very long wire connects it to the LAN/network port of my PC directly. The quality and the length of the cable can affect the signals that are passing through. Near the wire, if you have any other electrical devices or another wireless connection, it is possible that it could interfere with the signal.

We can also consider your wireless device. If you have a mobile phone or a laptop connecting to a wireless router, you probably would have problems connecting if you are far from it. I also noticed that there are some mobile handheld devices that don't have the same range as wireless network cards for PCs and laptops. They often drop connections so the quality of the device can also be the factor.

And finally, the drop in the connection will be quite considerable if there are multiple users on that wireless connection especially if it has limited bandwidth. At home, my DSL router is connected directly to my PC so it's quite fast and almost always reaches its top rated speed. However, when I share the connection with my sister when she uses her laptop on the next floor, she experiences a much slower connection. When we both download the same file at the same time, my PC always has the better speed.

I remember when I was part of a technical support team for a DSL service provider who has both wired and wireless internet services, intermittent internet connection on a wireless connection was quite common. This is quite difficult since we have to find out where the interference is coming from. But once we figure it out, the connection usually becomes a lot faster.

So if you're having problems with your wireless connection, try to investigate if there are any sources of interference around your devices and/or wires. Make sure you are at an optimal distance from the device and always observe your connection.
