Why Worry?

Stop Worrying About Things that Don't Matter or that You Can't Control

Everyone worries, its a simple fact of life. But if you stop worrying about the petty stuff, situations out of your control, and situations you can control; you will lead a more relaxed, productive life. Even the Bible, one of the oldest books in history mentions worrying in Matthew 6:27- "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" Worrying is also harmful as it causes stress, which has been proven to increase the chances of you being obese, having a heart attack, and/or developing diabetes.

One of the most common causes for worry are all the small things in life, such as deadlines, how you look, and anything else that will have a negligible impact at most. Why do we worry about these things when often they will be forgotten within a week? Focus on the big things, that way instead of worrying about how you look, how your co-worker is talking behind your back, or even whether or not you're going to be late for something, you can focus on the important and urgent things in your life.

Don't worry about stuff out of your control. You can't do a single thing to influence whether or not what your worrying about will happen, so just forget about it. if it happens it happens... big deal. Worrying about things you can't control only leads to wasting your energy and time. It's pointless, its like worrying that a window is going to fall from a building as you walk through New York City... it could happen, it probably won't, but if it did happen you couldn't do anything about it. Often on the news (not as often now) people are talking about what they think might happen if the terrorists poison our food/water supply, blow up a bridge, or God knows what else they think the terrorists might do, my personal opinion is that unless you have a direct role in preventing a terrorist attack on our food/water supply stop talking about one like its your direct responsibility to warn the nation about a hypothetical attack. My point is, unless its your job to prevent a terrorist attack stop worrying about what they might do to you, instead keep an eye out for anything suspicious and you've done your part in protecting our country.

If something important is in your control, have confidence in your ability to influence/control it, you don't need to worry about it if you know you can do it. Don't procrastinate and keep busy and you won't have time to worry because you'll be to busy doing what you were planning on worrying about.

To sum everything up, basically you shouldn't need to worry about anything, although that is unreasonable to expect from anybody. Think of this in every situation you want to worry in: is it small, out of your countrol, or in your control. If its any of those categories (which it will be) then you shouldn't worry about it.

  • If its out of your control, forget about it.
  • If its in your control, get busy.
You don't need to worry about anything... but you probably will.
