Why Would Anyone Want to Legalize Marijuana in America? Prop 19 Supporters Say This is Why

Prop 19, Calif. Marijuana Legalization Vote: Will it Go Up in Smoke?

Radell Smith
I've tried to think of a legitimate reason someone would want to legalize drug use in America. Here's the possibilities that come to mind (although I'm gonna debunk each one):

Some people want to legalize so they can use the drug

This is the obvious reason people want it legalized: they already use it illegally. Now when someone is already committing a known crime, why in the world would we listen to anything they have to say on it? They've already chosen criminality in their life. They can't have too many brain cells if they did that, knowing they could get arrested at any time. But they want us to all fry our brain cells by doing it with them.

Some people want to make the money instead of the drug dealer

Let's face it, they're is always going to be someone who wants to make a buck at the expense of others, even if it is in drug dealing.

Here you have the people who want to be drug dealers...legitimately.

Like the users, they want to do the crime, sort of, but they don't want to risk jail for the money. So they fund Prop 19 or vote for it, so they can grow it and sell it.

Do we really want to listen to anyone wanting to make a buck off of some poor kid addicted to dope? Can't they earn a legitimate living doing something more productive in society?

Some people imagine the government is trying to steal their fun

You have some marijuana users that think it is a harmless drug that the government is just trying to tell them they can't use in order to ruin their fun. They claim the drug doesn't harm you no matter how many convicts come forward to say they smoked dope before they robbed the bank, raped the girl, shot their mama, and on and on and on.

Talking sense to this group, when medical research shows it does have some addictive qualities and it does cause the loss of brain cells and create health problems is like talking to someone who...you guessed it: has few brain cells.

Some people believe it will reduce crime

If this idea bore any fruit we wouldn't have all the drunks running around America and killing people on the roads. Whether a drug is legalized (like alcohol) or not, people aren't going to stop abusing it.

You can't legalize common sense. You can't legalize moderation. And you can't legalize people into not going beyond the "legalized rules."

Crime is going to keep on a coming in some shape, form or fashion even if pot is legalized.

Are kids still buying liquor before they are 21? Are adults still buying it for them to drink? Are under 21 year olds still driving DUI and killing people? Are corrupt liquor stores still selling it to minors or people too intoxicated to drive? Are bars allowing customers to come in and leave drunk...with keys in hand? Legalization won't stop crime.

Some people just hate the "No" word

The last group of people who want marijuana to be legalized in California and beyond are the group of people who just can't accept "No" about anything. They are the ones that cite that the feds can't tell the state what to do. They get all righteous about their "rights" and indignant about people trying to run other people's lives.

One such guy was featured in a news ad recently I saw, and he was holding up the dumbest sign you could make. It said it was his "mind" as if that is why government should let him mess it up with drugs. Now you see why government has to intervene sometimes; some people can't even think rationally for themselves, willing to do themselves harm just because they "want to."

California marijuana legalization, Prop 19

California's marijuana legalization issue--or Prop 19 as it is also known--has the internet and country in such an uproar that the U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has had to put his federal foot down. Holder is warning the people I've just written about. And they would do well to heed his warning.

"We will vigorously enforce the CSA against those individuals and organizations that possess, manufacture or distribute marijuana for recreational use, even if such activities are permitted under state law," Holder said, according to Mercury News in Silicone Valley.

Prop 19 may pass California. And marijuana may be legalized in the state of Calif. for recreational use. But I wouldn't want to be the person growing, distributing or using it when it happens. And I wouldn't want to live in a state that allows it either. The term "good times" or "high times" is going to come to be referred to as "a bad trip" when the feds move in on you. As officers say on the road: You've been warned.

I see that you like having teen drug dealers and people in jail for cultivation and commerce, because that's what the ban you support creates. Banning any substance creates a black market. There is no substance so bad that a black market can't make it worse.

If you left a comment and it does not appear you 1)tried to leave a link to one of your own articles that does not get many readers, 2) posted a link to a source off AC or 3) didn't make a lick of sense and I don't want other readers confused by you.

Can you imagine people driving around under the influence of marijuana or even serving you at a restaurant? It is more dangerous than alcohol, that is for sure.

And I forgot to mention.....marijuana smoke is more carcinogenic than regular cigarette smoke.....and people think it should be used for medicinal purposes???

Fantastic article Radell, and I totally agree with the points you make. Marijuana is NOT a harmless drug; it is addictive, it slows a person's reaction time, alters their brain function, and is destructive to relationships (seen that firsthand). There is NO good reason for legalizing a drug for recreational use!!

@Sherri: Tweet away, sister! @Atlanta: I know, I know...but don't you feel sorry for these deceived people who think doing drugs is "okay?"

Absolute garbage. Please refrain from writing about an issue you clearly do not understand.

Lol legalize marijuana but crack down on the tobacco industry. Double standard for sure. I think drunk driving should have been an issue before stopping the tobacco industry frankly. How many people kill others in their car and say .. it was cause of my cigarettes. Marijuana a mind altering drug, will make more accidents for sure and more crime, ruin lives and make our country more degraded. But lets make laws to stop a little girl from selling lemonade on the street! Thats the ticket!
