Why I Write Celebrity Gossip for Associated Content from Yahoo

Writing Arts and Entertainment Articles for AC Helps Me Cope with My Aged Care Commitment to My Mum

Susan Jane
A full-time carer of a dementia sufferer needs a non-serious outlet

Caring for my 91 year old mother is a labor of love. I have been doing this full-time for more than seven years. It was my choice and I made a "till death do us part" commitment. During that time, I have seen my Mum's mental faculties deteriorate slowly. Living in this situation is sometimes stressful, depending on my mindset at the time. I often sink into a mild form of depression for no reason other than our lives are in a sameness mode that becomes very tedious. It is also sad to see my Mum doing things she would normally find crazy.

I gave up full-time work as a contract Technical Writer almost two years ago because I was finding being "Wonder Woman" was wearing me out physically and mentally. Technical Writing is a fairly boring occupation some of the time. I was getting sick of it anyway and I don't really miss the "cut and paste" nature of some of the work I was doing. It was hard to find contracts that challenged me intellectually.

Finding Associated Content and writing a large quantity of Arts and Entertainment articles has given me a less serious outlet that the day-to-day hum-drum of aged care. I have also found the interaction with so many great people (my fans) on AC , has cheered me. I discovered I am not the only contributor doing the care thing. I truly appreciate the time my fans give to me to be encouraging and supportive.

Trawling through on-line newspapers and magazines for the latest tid-bits about Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber amuses me and takes me out of my own stressful world for a small amount of time. Writing about celebrities and their antics makes me laugh. I need laughter in my life no matter what the source is. Celebrity gossip just happens to do it for me!

I have always loved reading about celebrities

From a very young age, I have been fascinated with the entertainment industry. My cousin had a cupboard full of movie magazines and I often begged her to give me some to take home. She gave me a few and I was able to moon over film stars and read about what they were up to. In those days (the fifties), the antics reported were very tame compared with today's goings on.

I still have a huge collection of pictures of movie stars and singers collected when I was a teenager. In those days I just couldn't make up my mind whether I was in love with Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Bobby Rydell, James Darren, Troy Donahue, Frankie Avalon or Robert Wagner. They were all so handsome and they made my heart flutter.

Now, I don't get the same buzz from seeing a picture of Justin Bieber, but I have to admire the little guy. He is out there making a name for himself and a pile of money. More importantly to me, he has given me 14,600 page views on AC for just two articles I wrote about him when he was in Australia last year.

I do it for the page views and to keep my spirits high

As an Australian on Associated Content from Yahoo, I am only able to earn dollars for page views. For this reason, I write "celebrity articles" and "celebrity gossip" to boost my PV total. In fact, more than half my Page Views can be attributed to Arts and Entertainment articles.

I can't stand Charlie Sheen, his show or his behavior - but writing about him has given me 8,400 page views.

Similarly, I have never been a fan of Tiger Woods. The scandal that broke late in 2009 brought to the surface the true nature of the beast. I jumped on the band wagon and scored myself 18,700 page views for 12 articles.

I have always tried to be impartial and non-accusatory when writing about celebrities doing bad things - or stupid things - or just things. There is always a positive in every negative and a good example is Nicole Richie. She became a mother of two, married her boyfriend Joel Madden and now has a successful career as an author and designer. For every stupid Lindsay Lohan act, there is a positive occurrence by a former bad girl or boy who has cleaned up their act. Robert Downey Junior is one actor who seemed doomed, but he turned his life around and went on to continued success in films.

So if I write about the sometimes inane antics of celebrities, behind the scenes there is therapy going on. If I didn't have something stupid or comical to write about, I might succumb to sinking deeper into depression - and that is not a good place to go. My Celebrity Clicks keep me in a bright mood for a while.

I took care of my grandma for over 3 years until she passed, and AC was an outlet I used on occassion then, and I recently got back into it. First of all, you are a SAINT to do full-time care (I know it is entirely life-consuming) and secondly, you don't have to defend what you do. You have the page views, the fun of writing, and a way to relax when you really need that 'out". Good for you!!!

    Good for you!

Fantastic article Susan! It was very moving and interesting to read. And I truly respect your dedication to caring for your mother even when things get so difficult. Having a chronic illness, working from home became my only option, so I, too, am very glad to have found AC! Thanks for sharing this story!!

Lady Jane, you are indeed a lady--a very loving, and compassionate one in caring for your Mum. I enjoy looking at all the celebrity fashion and hoping it will inspire me to get skinny enough to look that good. LOL.

If it isn't hurting anyone, and it's helping your page views, go for it!

I also like to write about celebrities and I think I'll be focusing more on entertainment in the New Year-for the page views but also for the love of acting and film. I think writing can be quite therapeutic and we should always write to our interests and passions. I so enjoy all your writing here and keep up the fine work Susan! All the best-Allison

You are to be admired for your caregiving qualities and your writing ability. Great article.

Caregiving is HARD!!! (Like most worthwhile things...) As for the writing, some people don't get that this is not a blog, but a professional writing job - just because you write about something doesn't mean you approve of it, or are even particularly interested in it. But somebody sure must be interested in the celebrities or you wouldn't be getting so many page views. Maybe you are providing an escape for some other stressed - out soul through your writing.

This is the most noble commitments to writing one could make. Write what you want, when you want to, to satisfy yourself. That's what's it's about, here on AC! Glad it's working so well for you. Regards to Mum. Blessings!

O.K. now I understand...just kidding, you do a great job on your articles, very tasteful. Did you get a notice about re-applying for arts and entertainment contributor? I did for Crafts and Hobbies, we'll see.

Being a full time caregiver is the hardest thing in the world to do. I am glad you found a way to relieve your stress and earn a bit of pocket change, too!
