Why New York is a Great Place for Filmmakers

Filmmakers can get More Grants in New York
There are numerous grants available to individual filmmakers in New York. While filmmakers are located in various parts of the country, this is one of the few places where it is easier to obtain financial assistance for film projects. Many other non-profit organizations require filmmakers to be sponsored by a larger entity before they can be eligible for monetary gifts. While searching for grants, I found great opportunities in unlikely places. However, many of these grants require you to be a New York Resident to apply.

Film grants alone may not be a sufficient reason for moving to this state. Those who reside in New York are still better off than living somewhere else while making films. Some of the assistance programs available to artists are operated by small groups who are dedicated to supporting the arts. Other areas of the country have film organizations and state commissions. However, there are little or no available grants for citizens who are not sponsored by non-profit organizations. This is one of the reasons why New York is a great place for filmmakers.

There are Inexpensive Filmmaking Resources in New York
Film and video equipment can be expensive to purchase or even rent. These items are available at community art and media centers located in New York. One can go and edit his or her documentary using these facilities without spending a lot of money. There are also community television stations that air work created by local filmmakers. This provides an opportunity to get your work seen and gain an audience. There are not many media centers in other areas of the country that offer free or inexpensive services and equipment. The availability of resources in New York is another reason why filmmakers can do well in this state.

There are More Media Connections in New York
It is not easy to obtain a job or freelance gigs in other parts of the country. This is especially true for filmmakers who do not reside in large cities. In these cases, men and women are forced to create freelance opportunities by focusing on regular video services for events like weddings. Another choice would be to move to a larger city that has more opportunities for filmmakers. While you may not automatically get a job working for MTV, there are lots of places that will hire someone to edit, operate a camera or help produce video programs.

There are many Independent Movie Theaters in New York
Some filmmakers choose to self-distribute their film upon its completion. This can cost a lot of money, depending on the screening facility that is chosen. New York has many small independent theaters that program independent films. You can have your film rented by one of these facilities. These movies theaters also offer rental space at moderate prices. The availability of independent facilities is another reason why New York is a great place for filmmakers.

What a humorous comment. Union cards may net you more benefits! Looks like you may not have to move, you're pretty much living the good life. Unions are pretty cool, until they want you to pay high fees. Lol.

Okay, you talked me into it -- I'm moving. Should I bring my union card, though?
