Why Are Youth so Quick to Kill People?

Myra Smith
When I was a kid things were a lot different when it came to dealing with a bully or the neighborhood kids who liked to pick on all the littler kids. I would run and tell my mother or another adult, or I would just simply cry out of frustration and anger. I never used a weapon, although I've threatened to do so. I've never wanted that person dead, literally, even though it would have been nice not having them around. When I had finally had enough and got tired of getting picked on then I would fight back and stand up for myself. I didn't need a gun, a knife, or any type of weapon; I just used my voice, and occasionally my fists. Now-a-days things are totally different. You really have to be careful what you say and who you say it too; or those just might be your last words.

The majority of the deaths that have occurred in my city and cities around the country have been a result of gun violence mainly the youth. If you were to ask the shooter why he did it he or she would probably have a response that would make you cringe. A response like; he stole my chain, she slept with my man, he called me a bad name, she bumped me in the club, he told my boys I was a punk, she told my girls I was nasty, and the list gets longer and pettier by the day. People are really killing over words and people are really dying never being able to take back what they've said.

Why? Why are people's hearts so filled with hatred, and rage? Why are people so afraid? Fear can be a very deadly emotion. People react quickly when they feel they might be harmed, due to self- preservation. The youth are not being taught that sticks and stones may break their bones but words can never hurt them, or I'm rubber and your glue and whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you. No, they're being taught that if someone says something you don't like then you got to let them have it, show them how bad you are. Look at TV and all the garbage they promote in most of the movies. The bad guys pick on the good guy, so now the good guy has to kill all the bad guys because in his mind they shouldn't have messed with him/her. Our youth feel that they are the good ones and if someone bothers them they have to eliminate them because they shouldn't have messed with them. No more talking about the problem, or forgive and forget. It is now kill or be killed. To them this motto is justifiable.

Our Youth need help and they need it now! They need guidance and love. They need to be taught consequence, discipline, and forgiveness. They need to be immersed in an atmosphere of possessiveness. All the negative lyrics in the songs and all the violence on TV need to be banished they are contributing to the destruction of our youth. Youth are not only targeting other youth but they will also kill anyone they see as a threat old and young, rich or poor, white or black. We have to intervene and we have to do it now or we can kiss the future for today's youth good bye... Grace&Peace.

Why are adults so quick to kill people? Many young in California are quick to kill, because it is part of their gang code. Initiation into the Bloods, as an example is having to spill blood. That does not mean kill, it could mean stabbing someone. The MS-13 and Mexican-Mafia are the two known for most brutalities. They kill random family members of a rival gang members, simply to enforce payment of taxes to their group. Many of the youth living in gang ridden neighborhoods feel compelled to join these gangs for protection.
