It's that time again - July 4th! A time for food, fun and spectacular fireworks. Fireworks have been a part of Independence Day since the first celebration in 1777. This year that will be no different as we proudly celebrate our nation's 235th Birthday.
No matter what your age, we all look forward to a great weekend filled with fun and amazing fireworks. This year Wichitans are in for great times and a full weekend of excitement. Wichita has an assortment of great activities and events to help add a special spark of excitement to you weekend.
Start your Independence Day celebrations early on July 1st . Bring the whole family and begin at the Sedgwick County Zoo with Wet-N-Wild days! Enjoy the animals, join in the games, have a picnic and keep cool by playing in the cascading water sprinkler towers.
July 2nd there is a whole line up of activities that are sure to add fun to your day. First off, the Wichita Botanical Gardens kicks off it's grand opening celebration for their Children's Garden. Next, you could join in Cowtown's Celebrate American fun with a watermelon seed spitting contest, pie eating contests, magic demonstrations, and sack races; or you could join a cow pie tossing contest! If that's not enough fun for you then there is also Music and Dancing shows by the Dixie lee Saloon Girls, Belly dancers, Gypsies, and others! Cowtown also has a lot of great food and beverages to enjoy as well a beer garden so it is sure to be a great time for the whole family. In addition to the fun to be found at Cowtown you can add to your day by heading over to Wichita's Old Town district and paying a visit to the Old Town Farm and Art market where there is something for everyone! Enjoy the live entertainment, delicious food, fresh produce, cooking demonstrations, as well as children's activities, and wonderful hand-made crafts.
Finally, Wichita has fun as the sun goes down! In the evening hours of July 2nd you will find a spectacular fireworks display. Bring an end your fun filled day with Wichita Wingnut's Baseball, Hometown hero's and a blast of fireworks at Lawrence Dumont Stadium who will be celebrating its 36th consecutive year fireworks show. The celebration begins at 7:05 PM with the Wingnut's baseball game, followed at 9:00 PM by a Salute to Hometown Heroes hosted by KAKE News which is then concluded by a Fireworks finale that begins at approximately 9:45 PM.
