recycling. In Tim Potter's article titled "Wichita, Sedgwick County are not taking action on recycling" he says, "the official trash plan adopted by the county called for curbside recycling in all cities -- including Wichita -- six years ago." Wichita assistant Public works director, Joe Pajor, is quoted in the article as saying, "the city is not currently pursuing the idea." The idea of recycling is not on city politician's minds. Meanwhile, what are the local landfills beginning to look like?
I am not a native of Wichita. I moved from California in May of this year, where each of the homes I lived in had curbside recycling bins. I didn't mind paying a bit more for the service, appreciating that the items would be recycled into new products. Now in Wichita, I live in an apartment complex, where we throw everything into the trash. I feel guilty doing this; we are putting glass, aluminum, plastic, cardboard all into the trash. Mind you, I know I could keep bins in my home for the different items and take them to centers myself. However, being the mother of three young children, I am very busy. Taking these items to a drop off location is not convenient for me. But what am I teaching my children? I thought about starting a Community Recycling Group but this also takes time and effort. Maybe if I didn't feel so alone in that effort it would be easier. My children would be excited to help. I believe that if our politicians made it important to them, the whole city would fall behind in that decision.
I researched the local companies that offer many different recycling services and the products that you can recycle. See Below!
I found this to be educational for myself as well, now I have the information and I just need to make a recycling plan!

Post a CommentI appreciate your busy schedule, but as you mentioned your children would love to help, make it a fun thing for them to visit the recycling facility. I urge you to do what you can as you wait for the curbside recycling idea to be adopted by Wichita leaders. Waste within our growing population is a hugely important issue, Wichita already has serious land/water contamination downtown from industrial waste. I too am very busy, I end up piling my recycling in my car every time I go out, eventually taking it to a recycle facility (sometimes waiting 2 weeks). The best one (they take everything) is ProKS recycling. They are between I-35 & Broadway, South of Kellogg and South of Mt. Vernon on Clark St. (you will have to google them, they are nestled in a neighborhood). I hope my comment has been helpful/motivational for you, glad to have you in Wichita! We need more progressive thinkers here!
