Nunchuck is required; Wii Balance Board is optional for drums.
There are several basic games that the Nintendo Wii makers have released as sort of staple games to have. Those games are Wii Sports, Wii Play and now that all of the Rock Band and Guitar Hero games are popular they wanted a staple musical game. For the Wii Music video game you do not need any extra instruments and it cannot really be compared to the Rock Band type games. As the Wii Music game is quite a different game and has far more instruments to play than those other games.
Many of the elementary schools are using this game in music class. It allows the students to see what many instruments look like. Most schools cannot afford to buy all of the instruments available so this game gives them a good idea of the look and sound of a musical instrument they may be interested in. By using Wii Music in the schools it is another way to bring fun into the class and get students interested in music.
My children got to play the Wii Music game at school but never really said much more than they got to play the game. They may not have had much of a chance to play around with it enough to want to buy the Wii Music game for at home. When they got to play the game at home and explore more with it they seemed to enjoy it more.
Wii music allows you to pick and instrument and a song and then play the song. To unlock more instruments and songs you must complete lessons or mini games. Some of the 50 songs included are: Happy Birthday, Day Dream Believer, Chariots of Fire, Do-Re-Mi, and Legend of Zelda. The songs vary from old folk songs to classical music with popular rock songs sprinkled around. There virtually is some type of music for everyone with this game.
My family enjoys playing the Wii Music video game because of all the different musical instruments available. When you use a favorite tune and change instruments the possibilities are endless. There was no musical knowledge or talent needed or necessary to play this game. Although a sense of rhythm to keep the beat would be helpful.
The favorite part of the Wii Music game that our family likes is making a music video picking out their own album cover and watching the video later on. Some of our favorite Wii Music instruments are: bells, steel drums, cheerleader, bass and ninja.
Over all it is a fun game with fun activities and songs. This may be a good game for the younger crowd, ages 5 to 10 years or the older crowd over 30 years. Unfortunately I think all of the Wii games seem over priced, this one especially. You may want to buy this game used or on sale so that you don't feel like you wasted your money once you or the kids get bored of the game.
