Wii Play: How to Earn a Platinum Medal in Fishing

Chris Tidwell
The Wii play is a collection of nine min games designed by Nintendo to make full use of their innovative Wii Remote. These games can be played with up to two players, but a unique feature of the single player mode is the ability to earn medals for achieving high scores during play, the highest honor of course being the Platinum medal. One game that may prove difficult for some is the Fishing Game featured in the Wii Plays line of games. This game may look simple, cute and easy at first glance, but may prove a bit challenging to earn the highest medal.

Fishing is a great pastime and is also a very fun game featured on the Wii Play. In this game you'll be asked to take a fishing rod and move it through a very poorly animated pond filled with various cardboard cut out fish. Aside form the graphics being terrible Fishing on the Wii is actually very fun and interactive. Move your rod up and down and forward and back to adjust hook depth and go after the big one!

Try and position the hook as close as possible to the fish you're trying to catch and lower the rod gently into the water. The fish will begin to nibble on your line but don't try and catch them just yet. Most fish will need to hit your line an average of three times before they actually take the bait, so just like when your fishing for real, you'll just have to practice patience.

Watch out for the "Small Fry" that roam the pond because they'll be more then happy to take your bait and run with it, and if you mistakenly catch one of these small fries you'll be hit for a loss of fifty points. If your rod ever feels like you have an instant hit don't jerk up and attempt to catch the fish because it's more then likely these little guys looking to make you lose points. Also one of the defining characteristics of a Small Fry hit is the random movement of your rod around the pond.

To maximize your score try and catch the fish pictured in the box at the top of your screen. If you catch one of these fish you'll be rewarded with double points for the fish. Also watch and try and catch the bigger of the species. There is an actual size difference between fish of the same kind, like one "Plain ol' Fish" may be worth fifty points where as a larger one will be worth up to ninety points. Keep this in mind when trying to catch fish for the bonus points.

The fish that are worth the most points are the "King of the Pond" and "Mystery Fish" both of which will appear towards the middle and end of your time at the fishing hole. When the King of the Pond appears the bonus box should also change to picture this monstrous fish, so immediately try to hook up with him in order to get a lot of points with a single catch, the same goes for the Mystery Fish. Also be aware that these two fish are very touch and will need more time to take your bait so sit tight and after about five or six nibbles they will be taking off with your bait.

Putting the horrific graphics aside Fishing is one of the better games the Wii Play game has to offer, and with the above tips and tricks you'll be a pro in no time, earning the Platinum Medal!
