Wii Play Table Tennis: A Worthwhile Game

Mark Murphy
Don't confuse this version of Table Tennis with other Wii games available. Wii Play is a bundle of 9 games and a remote. The package costs $50, which is a great deal since the remote alone will set you back $40. So for $10 you get 9 very different games. If you're in the market for an extra remote, spend a few extra dollars and grab the games as well.

The Wii Play Table Tennis game isn't as activity-intensive as some of their other games. There isn't a lot of body motion involved, just moving your hand back and forth to make ball contact. The idea behind the game is to rally 100 times. At first this seems rather simple but the speed ratchets up at a certain point and continues to go up from there. Reaching 100 rallies is actually a bit of a challenge.

The entire game is shot from overhead, giving each player a good view of the playing area. A disembodied hand holding a paddle indicates each player. The graphics are pretty standard for a Wii game, which is to say they are nothing to shout about. They are enough to give you good game play, however. The sound of the ball is pretty realistic compared to a real game of table tennis, but that's about all I can say about the sound.

This bundle is easy to play and safe for all ages and considering the extra remote, not expensive at all. These games are more fun when playing with a friend but their appeal with soon die down. This bundle is really made to showcase the abilities of the Wii remote, which it does very well. Table tennis players looking for a real challenge probably won't be interested in this game. Serious games will probably view the Wii and its games with contempt as well. On the other hand, folks just wanting something to entertain their kids or guests will find Table Tennis, and the bundle as a whole, worthwhile.
