Wild Blue Premium Blueberry Lager Beer Review
Anheuser-Busch Beer Introduced by Blue Dawg Brewing (Baldwinsville, NY)
Wild Blue Premium Blueberry Lager won a North American Brewer's Association Gold Medal. However, some of my taste testers deemed the beer's blueberry flavor too sweet. If sweetness, blueberries or blueberry pie are not your thing, then you should probably avoid Wild Blue. As a Wild Blue press release stated earlier in 2008, the blueberry lager is "not suited for timid or reserved beer drinkers." The press release also defines the Anhueser-Busch beer as "a robust and aromatic beer with a refreshing, palate-cleansing finish." I agree with both statements.
I started drinking Wild Blue Blueberry Lager out of the 12 ounce amber glass bottle. So, when I poured some in a glass for someone to taste, I was surprised by its' color. The blueberry lager has a distinct reddish-purple color reminiscent of cranberry juice. The bold color obviously complements the bold blueberry flavor.
With its' distinctly bold blueberry flavor, Wild Blue lager beer is probably not a beer you can drink in excess. Of course, its' 8% alcohol by volume content would also be prohibitive of such actions. However, I think the blueberry beer could nicely complement certain foods. The Wild Blue press release suggests "Wild Blue needs to be paired with a dish brimming with robust and intense flavors." After all, Wild Blue beer is robust and intense. Wild Blue brewmaster Jill Vaughn said, "There's nothing shy about this beer, so don't be afraid to match it with strong foods. You want foods with snap and punch, so they won't get lost or overpowered." I agree wholeheartedly. The strength of the blueberry lager necessitates strong food pairings.
Wild Blue premium blueberry lager beer seems to be targeted at adults who like to experiment and try new things. If that fits your personality and you like strong tastes, Wild Blue is worth a taste test. Just be prepared for alcoholic, blueberry pie in a bottle. Also, remember to expect a beer that looks like cranberry juice.
For a lighter and subtler fruit-infused beer (with less alcohol by volume), try Michelob ULTRA Fruit-infused summer pilsner beer in three distinct flavors - Pomegranate Raspberry, Orange Tuscan Grapefruit and Lime Cactus.
