Wild Willy's Burgers in South Portland, Maine; A Review

Eva Gallant
Wild Willy's is a small burger chain at 449 Westbrook Street, in South Portland, Maine with additional locations in York, Maine, Watertown, Worcester, and Needham, Massachusetts, and Rochester, New Hampshire. They claim to serve "real burgers for real burger lovers," and they don't lie! I have visited the York location once, and the South Portland at 449 Westbrook Street location several times and have never been disappointed.

A variety of certified Angus burgers are available on the menu, in the $6.00 to $6.50 price range, as well as a few bison burger choices for those who prefer a leaner meat. Recently they have added, at least at the South Portland, Maine store a "gluten-free menu," and, yes, the burger comes on a gluten-free bun. Other options such as chicken sandwiches, steak sandwiches, and chili are there for the asking, but I never can get past their angus beef burgers. I have two favorites. One is called the "Bubba BBQ" which comes with hickory-smoked bacon, cheese, onion, pickles and a wonderful BBQ sauce; my second favorite is the "Bandito" which comes with sauteed onions and cheddar cheese. When I want to be a little healthy in my choice, I order one of their huge, "Big Sky" fresh salads ($4.95) with fresh greens, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and mushrooms. On my most recent visit, I chose to share my favorite sides of crisp, non-greasy fried onion rings and fresh-cut French fries with my husband, who always has the "Willy", a burger classic with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayonaise.

Burgers are cooked to your liking: you want it rare? You've got it! I opt for medium well, and the meat is always juicy and delicious! Even the drinks are special. There's a Fontier Draft Rootbeer that comes in a large or extra large mug; the fresh made lemonade is tangy with half a lemon in the cup. Frappes and other drinks are available, but I can't pass up that lemonade! Beer and wine are also available, but only when served with food. Willy's is not a bar. I have included photos of my most recent menu choices; luckily I snapped the pictures before I gobbled everything down!

If you love a real hamburger, Wild Willy's may be worth a stop!

Note: I was not compensated by Willy's for this review; I'm just in love with their burgers and onion rings.
