Will 'All My Children' Get Canceled in 2011?

Is it Time to Retire Erica Kane?

'All My Children' may get canceled in 2011. It would not be a surprise for soap opera fans. Both "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns" were canceled.

There was a time when soap operas, which began on the radio, sponsored by soap companies, and then later, moved to television, were all the rage. If your mother was a stay-at-home mom, chances are she wouldn't miss an episode of "As the World Turns" or "All My Children." Iconic figures of soap operas stay embedded in our minds, such as Luke and Laura from "General Hospital." "All My Children" may get canceled in 2011, but we will always remember Erica Kane.

But those days are over. There's cable. There's satellite, and there's literally hundreds of choices from talk shows to reality TV shows to everything in between.

The rapid decline in soap opera viewing is, not surprisingly, severely hurting the soap opera magazine business, too. "Soap Opera Digest" and "Soap Opera Weekly" are struggling to hang on.

What will happen to Susan Lucci, the still beautiful 64-year-old who turned the name Erica Kane into a household word? Susan has been with "All My Children" since its inception on January 5, 1970.

Lucci, who is reported to be one of the highest, if not the highest, paid day-time actor on television, and who finally won an Emmy award in 1999, is likely to be around whether "All My Children" gets canceled in 2011 or not. Look for her as a guest star on TV shows, such as on "Hot in Cleveland" starring Valerie Bertinelli and Betty White.

I think that daytime Soaps are on their way out, unless they can figure out how to keep them going. I watched this show from episode 1 and watched Lucci grow as an actress.
