Will a Car Security Alarm Lower My Insurance Premiums?

Sabah Karimi

If you want to reduce your insurance premium without switching car insurance providers, it may be time to make some modifications to your vehicle. Many insurance providers will lower the cost of car insurance when they have proof that your vehicle won't be a target for theft and is safer than similar vehicles in your neighborhood. When your car, truck or other vehicle is outfitted with an alarm system and other security features, you may lower the risk of being a victim to vandalism and theft. This provides some security for the insurance company so they can reduce your rate accordingly.

Security Features and Your Car Insurance Premium

You have several options when it comes to adding security features to your car. If your car isn't already equipped with a basic alarm, you can have one installed by the dealership or a certified mechanic who works with your type of vehicle. Other security features you might consider installing include:

  • Motion sensors that set off the alarm when someone comes too close to your vehicle
  • Black boxes and GPS devices that can easily track a lost or stolen vehicle
  • Anti-theft devices that don't allow the car to start until a message has been sent to the owner (can be disabled by the owner when needed)
  • Keyless ignition systems that must be activated with an identification card or fingerprint recognition device

Security Features for Your Vehicle -- Things to Consider

While the upfront investment for these types of security features and alarm systems can be significant, you can enjoy some peace of mind that your vehicle will deter thieves and also be eligible to receive a discount on your car insurance premium. When you are filling out your car insurance application, make sure that the insurance company knows about any factory-installed anti-theft devices and other security features.

Sometimes insurance companies may not have all of the data about a particular make or model of a vehicle on file, so you'll need to provide as many details about your car as possible. If you need help with this, contact the dealership or call the manufacturer to find out exactly what features are already installed, and what options you might have for upgrades. Whatever you can do to reduce the risk of having your car stolen or vandalized can help to lower the cost of car insurance and save you some money in the long run.

I don't think anyone pays attention to car alarms. A GPS tracking system, though is worth it's weight in gold.
