Will Education Be a Priority in Albuquerque, New Mexico?

Michael Noker
All over the world, even outside the United States, names of presidential candidates are being dropped in every day conversation. From Palin to Obama and even to Steve Pearce and Tom Udall, people seem to care very deeply about their candidates.

In Albuquerque, the Democratic hopefuls are made up of Tom Udall for Senate and Martin Heinrich for House against Steve Pearce for Senate and Darren White for the House on the Republican side. Swayed as per usual by televised smear campaigns against the other candidate, many people know very little of any of the Congressional candidates. The sad part? Most of us don't care.

While I realize this is not necessarily a local issue so much as an issue in most or even all places, the poorly-educated inhabitants of New Mexico, specifically, Albuquerque, are left out in the cold to fend for themselves in the quest for knowledge about those for whom they are voting.

The important issues for New Mexico, as with most of the USA, seem to be leaning toward economic issues such as taxation, getting and keeping jobs, what to do with money when you have it and what to do when you don't, and all of the banks that seem to be collapsing in some sort of catastrophic domino effect. Issues we don't seem to be concerned with, however, are health care and education, with New Mexico ranking 50th in education for 2002, 03, and 04, and 48th for the 05-06 school year, according to Diggers Realm. Unfortunately, with Albuquerque's public schools in such a state of being that the only thing holding up the walls is all the gum, this means detriment for the K-12 students within the district.

I encourage everybody within New Mexico to do their research on such important issues as education before November comes. The only thing worse than an uninformed voter is an uninformed voter who gave up their chances to become knowledgeable.
