Will Ferrell and / or MTV, You Disgust Me

Even More Than You Did Before

I used to like the MTV movie awards, and while Cameron Diaz may be enough to get me to watch the rerun, I thought what Will Ferrell did as presenter was disgusting. Not even a little disgusting, but a lot disgusting. The movie awards have had some pretty zany things happen (remember that show, it was censored but they called it uncensored,) and nothing has bothered me this much. Mr. Ferrell engaged in a long, seemingly passionate kiss with the co-star of his new movie. Is anyone that good of an actor? I don't think I could do it, but then again I don't know anything about acting. He's a funny guy, if not one of the funniest alive, but he's not gay. What if kids were watching, Will? Does that even bother you? I don't think it does.

Given the show aired last week, but I've been ruminating on this for days, trying to figure out why he did it. Did he lose his edge, or does he just not know when to stop? Did the producers put him up to it (because we all know MTV has lost its edge?) Maybe it was a dare, in which case, its even worse. Whatever the case, I didn't see a great deal of press on this, and this is surprising to me. Have we really become so at ease with homosexuality that a prominent actor can behave like that in the name of comedy.

I'm not homophobic, and I would have laughed at a little peck, but the whole thing was overdone and lasted too long. Even the best violent movies don't overdo it on the blood and gore, and Eminem never drew a Ken Kaniff skit out this long. I just kept wondering when it was going to end, and that never happened with a Ken Kaniff skit.

I guess the big question here is: is this the end of Will Ferrell's career as a respected actor. My prediction is that the answer is no, and he will continue to make us laugh for many years to come. He will also keep me wondering why he kissed a guy that intensely on national television. All I know for sure is, that the next time I watch Elf, I hope I don't start looking for homoerotic subtexts. I also hope I do not watch Old School and realize I missed something big the first six times around.
